<Cowmoo> k I dunno, I definitely resorted to the heap
<Zeromus-X> guess it's Google time then!
<Cowmoo> I'm not sure how much help google would be...sounds like you don't have much choice other than discussing with the professor
<Zeromus-X> i mean, Google time regarding moving things to the heap.
<Cowmoo> do you know about new and delete?
<Zeromus-X> if that doesn't help then yeah, I'll make the drive out there.
<Zeromus-X> Yeah.
<nm_> hi
<nm_> anyone in here familiar with using the GMP library?
<Cowmoo> my suggestion would be to focus on gathering questions (potential ones too), and make a list, then discuss with professor
<Cowmoo> focus tonight, rather
<Zeromus-X> might be a good plan.
<Zeromus-X> i'll do that, and in the meantime, play around with the code to get at least the basic stuff running (generator, etc)... the project itself is due no later than Monday, so I'm trying to use all the time I can between now and then.
<Zeromus-X> plus I'm on the fourth bottle of Bawls so I'm pretty much up all night. ;)
<Cowmoo> :)
<Zeromus-X> I appreciate the help though. Good to know this is a "typical" ***ignment. We have, IMHO, a really horrible CS department here, curriculum-wise.
<Zeromus-X> smart professors, but the setup of everything is absolutely stupid.
<Cowmoo> oh this is a typical ***ignment alright...typically painful
<Zeromus-X> ha. awesome. ..
<Zeromus-X> after this i've got one more CS course to take here before graduation. that says a lot. seeing as how we've never done any kind of windows programming, i couldn't even tell you how to initialize a window. it's been all console apps for every cl*** for four years.
<Cowmoo> heh, same, but that's ok, that's the stuff you can learn on your own
<Cowmoo> university is (ideally) about harder stuff
<Zeromus-X> yeah i kinda figured that but it still seems weird that you come out with a CS degree with no experience with windows-based programming.
<Cowmoo> well CS isn't about windows :)
<Zeromus-X> oh, i agree
<Zeromus-X> but seeing as how it's the prominent OS, at least looking at it would be relieving!
<Cowmoo> ha
<Zeromus-X> i can imagine soemthing as simple as initializing a window would be good to know for real-world applications. without using visual basic of course.
<Cowmoo> so look into the C#
<Cowmoo> into C#, no the
<Zeromus-X> i've looked into it on my own, but we have exactly zero courses dealing with java or C#.
<Cowmoo> as it should be :)
<Zeromus-X> :)
<NKD> well im guessing most CS grads dont go right into coding windows software right after graduating
<Zeromus-X> guess I expected differently coming into the degree, that's all.
<t35t0r> does anyone know when analyzing the heapsort algorith does one count the number of element comparisons made in making the heap in addition to the number of comparisons while doing the sort step? or just the sort steps?
<Zeromus-X> i had plenty of C experience before I even came here, so I guess I was expecting more code and less theoretical/conceptual/optimization (Big-Oh, etc) stuff.
<Cowmoo> both t35t0r
<t35t0r> Cowmoo, ok
<Cowmoo> er
<Cowmoo> yea
<Cowmoo> both
<hotnikks> CS is a subset of Math. EOF.
<NKD> Math ftw
<hotnikks> i found that out the hard way :)
<Zeromus-X> yeah, me too!
<t35t0r> graph theory, game theory, number theory, etc
<hotnikks> theory of computation != fun
<Zeromus-X> i've got a big problem with memorization of formulas, so math was hell up in the Calc 2 / Linear Algebra levels.
<NKD> Formulas are easy to memorize if you make up a song for them
<NKD> Helps, anyway
<hotnikks> or if you have a ti89
<Zeromus-X> yeah i had a few little techniques, but some of those formulas would be a hell of a song
<Zeromus-X> ;)
<NKD> ti89, best investment ive ever made
<NKD> :P
<hotnikks> mine got stolen in hs :/
<Zeromus-X> none of my profs would let us use any calcs on tests/quizzes/exams. period.
<Zeromus-X> i had an 89 and it collected dust.
<hotnikks> some of my ap calc tests were w/o calculators
<hotnikks> but those you could use calculators on didnt help you much
<hotnikks> the way the exams were designed
<Zeromus-X> they said not being able to use calculators would help us in the future
<hotnikks> yeah it does
<Zeromus-X> i say it helped me retake the cl***es a couple times
<NKD> yeah, help you **** up a major problem because you tried to do the trivial number crunching by hand :P
<Zeromus-X> exactly!
<jamesd-> No, help you realize when you ****ed up punching it into your calculator and got a dumb answer.
<jamesd-> (And I do have a love for my calculator bordering on unhealthy ;)
<Zeromus-X> hey, okay... so ***uming the first entry in my simulated process list has an arrival time of 5... what would i do, start a timer and not actually start the loop until T=5?
<soysauce> _nv - please flame the VC guys for having ****y code generation :(
<t35t0r> i keep getting this strange error in Visual Studio, saying that end of file found before left brace '{' ..i don't see any EOF , why does it give me this error?
<soysauce> t35t0r - maybe because it was looking for a left brace and hit the end of the file first
<jamesd-> t: what do you mean, you don't see any end of file... is your file infinite?
<jamesd-> I need more HDD space.
<jamesd-> Have finite space right now.
<t35t0r> soysauce, i checked all the braces :(
<Daveman> hey Jey :P
<jamesd-> t35t0r: try cutting your file down until the error goes away... saving a copy unchanged first, of course. Or try reindenting/syntax highlighting, in case that shows something odd.
<Jey> yo
<Daveman> what's up, in the C++ world? :P
<Daveman> I guess I'll find out more, this weekend :P
<NKD> You know... I have to wonder... why does Borland send me Delphi spam
<NKD> I've never used a borland product, been to their website, or used Delphi
<jamesd-> NKD: P***. They don't spam me.
<jamesd-> I hear a rumour that they're updating their C++ compiler to make it somewhat standards-complaint
<jamesd-> compliant, even.
<_nv> Oh, the Inprise compiler? I can't wait.
<_nv> I don't know wtf they were thinking, but that name change cost them their shirt.
<Cowmoo> what name change
<Jey> Borland -> Inprise -> Borland
<Cowmoo> Borland are still around? I thought they went byebye
<t35t0r> damnit i hate visual studio
<Daveman> Sure they are, but no one likes them?
<t35t0r> vim is so much easier to use
<Jey> i agree
<Daveman> except perhaps, occ***ionally -- I hear they still have decent RAD tools
<_nv> I used to use Borland
<Daveman> vim4lyfe
<Daveman> anyway, night Jey :)
<_nv> naw, Borland sat around for so long that Microsoft even ate their RAD lunch.
<_nv> _m_, what are you, Donny Darko?
<_m_> Who is that?
<_nv> oh poor _m_ hasn't seen the Donny Darko movie.
<_nv> Everyone, let's have a moment of silence for _m_. Start now.
<_m_> That's something you could say about most movies.
<_nv> sure, but that one was pretty good
<t35t0r> jamesd-, i narrowed down the problem after cutting the file down but i still don't see why when I add this function i'm still getting the EOF error
<jamesd-> t35t0r: you could maybe put both versions up on the paste website.
<jamesd-> Or try a different compiler, often gets a better error message.
<_m_> The Boost 1.33.1 release is imminent.
<jamesd-> m: bugfixes only?
<_m_> yup
<_m_> quite a bunch of them, though.
<jamesd-> Guess I should read what's changed. We're using 1.33 at work now. Well, 0.3% of it.
<_m_> 0.3%? That's shared_ptr.
<jamesd-> And lexical_cast :)
<t35t0r> damn you microsoft!!
<roods> should i perfer raw pointers in my method signatures over boost pointers and just use .get(), or does that defeat the point
<t35t0r> quickSort.cpp:66:2: warning: no newline at end of file
<t35t0r> i even ran dos2unix on the file
<jamesd-> roods: that largely defeats the purpose.
<t35t0r> and put a newline there
<t35t0r> microsoft is so messed up it even has to screw up text files!@#$@#!
<_m_> huh?
<roopjm> yeah it does
<roopjm> i think does adds in a \r\n for a line break.. if i remember it right
<_m_> A C++ source file has to end in a newline. Some compilers don't enforce that. I don't think this lack of enforcement is a problem.
<jamesd-> Hmmmn, we do use a little of boost.function too. And maybe noncopyable.
<_m_> Boost.Parameters is beautiful.
<t35t0r> stupid lab computers don't have conio.h !
<Jey> BGL is disgusting
<NKD> I need a.. less-wide printer. I got this wide format HP DeskJet a while back but I never print anything wide
<_m_> It came exactly when I needed it (for writing a function with ~10 optional parameters without any natural ordering).
<ricebowl> conio.h is not standard
<NKD> ****s up tons of space
<_m_> NKD: just writer longer lines. Like you should do on IRC.
<NKD> Kind of like how you need to be less anal on IRC?
<_m_> No, more kind of like some people need a kick.
<NKD> Well, you're wearing the right jackboots for it
<_nv> man, today has been great for kicks.
<_m_> d'oh, and I missed that.
<NKD> No, you just broke your toe
<NKD> Here let me get you some ice
<jamesd-> Ta.
<NKD> http://www.redwingshoe.com/shoe-zoom.cfm?style=988
<NKD> That would make an awesome IRC kicking boot
<t35t0r> http://rafb.net/paste/results/Q0JsJ510.html does anyone see anything wrong with this function? When i comment it out I don't get that error but when I leave it in i do get that error, this is the last function in the .cpp file ..any ideas?
<_nv> t35t0r, no, but try commenting out individual lines
