<OlaRune> english?
<OlaRune> everyone knows english, don't they ^^
<ricebowl> lol
<ricebowl> not the people who live in South America
<OlaRune> they can blame themselves if they can't get an education ;)
<OlaRune> no, that was unfair
<OlaRune> sorry
<ricebowl> yes, just a bit :p
<ricebowl> many would like to learn English but can't find the money or the time or whatever
<OlaRune> yeah, i thought of that
<OlaRune> that's when i said "no, that was unfair"
<ricebowl> several have been trying to pick it up off of me
<OlaRune> ok
<ricebowl> but not terribly successfully
<ricebowl> because online is a ****ty medium for teaching English
<OlaRune> yeah it sure is
<OlaRune> spending some time in a foreign country, with many people to talk to, must be the best way to learn a language
<OlaRune> that's what i think
<ricebowl> yeah
<binrapt> Hmm but you have usually trouble with some grammar stuff then
<ricebowl> for sure
<ricebowl> binrapt - it takes effort, but grammar can be straightened out later
<ricebowl> I had to work very hard on my Spanish, but in 8 months I went from making many mistakes to making very few mistakes ;)
<ricebowl> mostly with regard to the subjunctive
<binrapt> I have a lot of friends who were not born in Germany but have been living for like 15 years in Germany and they still have bad accents and make many mistakes
<binrapt> They have trouble at school writing essays and stuff
<binrapt> Well, it's usually just the boys apparently
<binrapt> The girls are doing a good job...flawless German
<OlaRune> the boys maybe talk more to eachother than to the germans
<ricebowl> heh ;)
<ricebowl> binrapt - there's the matter of motivation
<ricebowl> if you don't want to learn it, you won't... I've been stagnating in my Spanish for the last month or so because I haven't put forth much effort
<OlaRune> i'm always motivated to learn new stuff
<OlaRune> from my point of view, that's a good attribute
<OlaRune> ^^
<ricebowl> well, learning a new language is time-consuming and difficult :p
<OlaRune> yeah, of course
<ricebowl> and not always fun, either
<binrapt> Sheesh, I don't really understand the sound descriptions of lojban :P not familiar with API
<binrapt> *IPA
<binrapt> Ahhh, right.
<OlaRune> how does that sound
<OlaRune> ?
<binrapt> Yeah, that's what I wondered.
<OlaRune> what is alveolear?
<binrapt> I suppose it's pretty much like the 't' I am familiar with.
<binrapt> No clue.
<OlaRune> ok
<OlaRune> do they compare it with other languages?
<binrapt> Woops, evil Unicod
<binrapt> + tabs.
<OlaRune> ^^
<binrapt> Heh, code indeed ;)
<OlaRune> yup
<binrapt> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet
<binrapt> Good lord
<binrapt> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPA_chart_for_English
<binrapt> Ah :)
<OlaRune> last one were easier
<OlaRune> i don't see the difference here:
<OlaRune> the '?
<OlaRune> shoould be .
<OlaRune> no it shouldn't, never mind
<binrapt> Screw the stress crap ;P
<OlaRune> yeah
<OlaRune> i wish i'd find somehing like that for the swedish
<binrapt> There sure are
<OlaRune> but maybe everything is represented in that one
<binrapt> No, that one is just for English, there are insane amounts of characters
<OlaRune> i wonder which ones are not representer, well there's ought to be some at least
<ricebowl> binrapt - coronal silibant => sh in English
<ricebowl> or something like that
<binrapt> Trying to find out what kinda r lojban has
<OlaRune> let em knwo
<OlaRune> know
<ricebowl> binrapt - probably undefined.
<ricebowl> meaning you can use rolled, trilled, tapped, flapped, retroflex, or whatever you like
<ricebowl> since r varies widely
<binrapt> Which r is the Spanish/Russian one? :)
<binrapt> Ah, the rolled one
<binrapt> Ah, got it now
<binrapt> Well, I can't stand uvular/velar approximant/fricative rhotic consonants then :P
<binrapt> Tap is pretty cool
<binrapt> Lojban sure contains a ****load of sh, then
<lck> sh scripting <3
<binrapt> Shh.
<OlaRune> wihc one is the swedish?
<lck> i use sh as pseudo code
<lck> the swedish what?
<OlaRune> R
<binrapt> OlaRune: Uhm I think the Swedish one is rolled?
<OlaRune> yeah maybe, but that one should not be mine
<OlaRune> i'm not talking "rikssvenska"
<lck> well, i speak 3 lang, norwegian, new norwegian and english
<binrapt> Norsk arisk svart metall
<lck> ja
<OlaRune> which one is the strange one for us swedes
<OlaRune> ?
<lck> nynorsk i think
<binrapt> Jag inte pratar norska
<OlaRune> pratar inte*
<OlaRune> lck: ok
<OlaRune> :P
<binrapt> Yes, Swedish has a rolled r
<binrapt> http://web.hhs.se/isa/swedish/9-43.wav
<OlaRune> yeah that would make sense, but i don't use the rolles ones, w8 i'll listen to that
<lck> swedish isn't to diff to learn, but the danish... when they start counting
<lck> fitres
<ricebowl> binrapt - Spanish has 2 r's
<binrapt> Hmm I roll the r in a weird way, I put my tongue pretty much to the right side
<ricebowl> trilled and tapped, IIRC
<OlaRune> that is the "riksvenska" R, i've got another
<binrapt> ricebowl: Rolled and tapped?
<binrapt> Perro/pero?
<ricebowl> right
<binrapt> Perro <- 2+ flaps
<ricebowl> Swedish r is the same as Spanish rr
<binrapt> pero <- 1 flap
<ricebowl> hm ok
<binrapt> Yeah, the wav shows it
<OlaRune> i'll look for one in my dialect
<OlaRune> wait a few mins
<binrapt> "Aren't Norwegian and new Norgwegian the same?" :)
<ricebowl> ja
<binrapt> *Norwegian :x
<OlaRune> hope you understood me
<OlaRune> ;)
<ricebowl> but they're different writing systems, not different languages
<OlaRune> yeah
<OlaRune> we understood you
<lck> look at this way, norwegian is c/c++, and nynorsk is like java, few use it, and nobody likes it
<binrapt> Lawl @ German orthography chaos, by the way.
<ricebowl> lol
<binrapt> We have two orthography systems being used, the old one and the new one which was introduced some years ago but isn't really accepted and has some weird irregularities, some say
<binrapt> Most people are writing like...a mix at best
<binrapt> Many newspapers and magazines refuse to use the new one :P
<binrapt> My aunt is a journalist and her newspaper recently stopped using it ;)
<lck> binrapt, where are you from?
