<_nv> Microsoft only HAS two real sources of income, most of the rest always loses money.
<kawfee> _nv: which are?
<ricebowl> _nv - Windows CE broke even
<MachinShi> ZorbaTHut: they never make money from the hardware. they make money from the games & the licensing contracts they signw / developers
<_nv> Windows, Office.
<pepp^> ZorbaTHut: They made profit on Xbox last year. Sony and MS both are gonna lose money on consoles but lately MS made profits thanks to their halo
<ZorbaTHut> mach, Nintendo does. :)
<kawfee> what about VS?
<ricebowl> and Visual Studio makes something like $1M a year--not amazingly profitable, but profitable nonetheless
<_nv> If Microsoft lost Windows and Office it would turn into a huge money pit.
<ricebowl> that's $1M net, not gross
<kawfee> M$ has much money in the bank.
<pepp^> _nv: one thing is true, they are nto gonna lose windows or office, in one night.
<_nv> sure, that's not bad.
<kawfee> Bill gates along could probably finance M$ for years
<_nv> But if msft lost Office and Windows they'd have to drop almost every product they make.
<kawfee> alone
<kawfee> _nv: They wouldn't let office and windows go. They would attack.
<kawfee> Unless they are just mismanaged
<pepp^> MachinShi: Don't believe me? check out ms annual report or something. I am telling you stuff that I read at a bank that was working with MS.
<MachinShi> very good. and they'd attack in the way of better software and features.
<kawfee> Cyrix_: How are things on the western front?
<MachinShi> which is a + for customers :)
<_nv> If Office software had real competition, they couldn't compete. Their management structure and office politics are abysmal. They'd have to fire most everyone and start hiring.
<ricebowl> kawfee - considering that they still can't make a stable Windows box, considering that they still can't stop zero-days, ...
<kawfee> MachinShi: right. That's agreed.
<kawfee> zero-days?
<pepp^> MachinShi: You may have realized that already has started happening. MS is improving their products.
<kawfee> ricebowl: I thought you were a bot =]
<kawfee> ricebowl: when did you come in here?
<MachinShi> slowly :)
<kawfee> I noticed.
<kawfee> He snuck in.
<pepp^> _nv: how do you know?
<ricebowl> kawfee - I am a bot.
<kawfee> calc bot
<CalcMe> bot = Hey, who are you calling a bot?!
<_nv> pepp^, uh, _nx is also me.
<kawfee> What's the calc for not allowing bots?
<ricebowl> kawfee - a week or two ago
<kawfee> ricebowl: finally decide to step up out of ***embler?
<pepp^> _nv: I mean how do you know MS won't be able to stand competition in OFfice software?
<ricebowl> kawfee - haha, if you hadn't noticed I'm still on #asm
<_nv> pepp^, they're bloated and slow. It's really quite painful.
<kawfee> ricebowl: I just messaged you in there. I noticed. =]
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: So who has autorized google to finance this?
<_nv> Even other divisions in Microsoft are quick and nimble by comparison (and trust me, they're neither quick nor nimble)
<ZorbaTHut> kawfee, how the hell should I know? :P
<kawfee> surely the investors aren't waging war on M$?
<pepp^> _nv: I think I can agree with you. But they are huge. I hope they have put some key minds in their Office department who run the Office division cuz thats a key for them to keep doing well.
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: MACH knows?
<ZorbaTHut> and if I did, what makes you think I'd be able to tell you? :P
<ricebowl> kawfee - we use asm and C++ interchangably at work, FYI ;)
<ZorbaTHut> kawfee, ask him then
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: dunno.
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: someone has to know. Someone has to be acountable.
<ZorbaTHut> yep, almost certainly
<kawfee> ricebowl: that's good. Inline asm?
<ZorbaTHut> and I bet they're high in the google planning committees
<_nv> pepp^, I think that if the worst happened Microsoft would rebound, but it would involve a lot of people getting fired.
<ZorbaTHut> which I'm not involved in.
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: why not?
<_nv> (Which they should have done already)
<kawfee> You should be in top with google head honchos
<ZorbaTHut> because that's what management does? :P
<kawfee> such a nasty word
<[proxy]> _nv: you talking about online office?
<kawfee> makes me cringe
<kawfee> [proxy]: hi
<_nv> because they have so many useless people, and an environment which encourages uselessness.
<[proxy]> kawfee: sup
<kawfee> _nv: who does?
<_nv> [proxy], no, just normal office
<ricebowl> kawfee - not as much inline asm anymore due to x86-64, but yes
<pepp^> _nv: I think this might be a good time for microsoft to change their structure. And how would they rebound if google already hires the best mind??? Best minds at google can catch up to slow MS. But MS will find it hard to catch up with google.
<[proxy]> _nv: i find that MS office has been lacking in innovation since the before clippy :(
<kawfee> ricebowl: what does 64 bit have to do with it?
<MachinShi> kawfee: he's a programmer. they're pretty low on the totem pole everywhere :)
<ricebowl> kawfee - a lot of my projects end up being emulators and such. Total PITA to write in asm, so you write mostly C code (technically C++, but I'm referring to style) and use asm when you have to
<_nv> [proxy], sure, but they make up for it. It's universal (document format lockin), they provide support, and everyone is used to it.
<ricebowl> kawfee - inline asm is abolished from the MS compiler for x86-64
<ricebowl> not supported at all.
<kawfee> MachinShi: that's sad
<kawfee> ricebowl: seriously?
<MachinShi> kawfee: i'm sure the ceo & brin & page know
<[proxy]> ricebowl: what type of emus you make? (i am an emu author too)
<kawfee> MachinShi: what is there tele?
<_nv> pepp^, Google Kirkland is picking Microsoft's pocket already, they're out of time.
<kawfee> I eat EMU!
<MachinShi> kawfee: haha. google.com dunno :)
<kawfee> EMU!
<pepp^> _nv: I am inclined to believe that MS has ALOT of useless people doing useless work. I know a lot of useless people who work there myself.
<MachinShi> brin (to gates & ballmer) : gentlemen. you have no chance to survive. make your time
<MachinShi> ;)
<pepp^> _nv: what is google kirkland??
<kawfee> pepp^: They are a large company. You are bound to find many useless people at any large company.
<_nv> pepp^, it's a twofold problem. One is that they have useless people. Two is that they have a culture which cripples the useful people.
<Zeromus-X> quickie: what's the biggest integer matrix you can use? varName[x][y] where x = ? and y = ?
<ricebowl> [proxy] - x86 emulator
<MachinShi> even small companies ;)
<ricebowl> x86 -> x86 which makes things interesting
<_nv> pepp^, it's a Google office right next door to Microsoft.
<[proxy]> ricebowl: like bochs? or quemu?
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: you know I can see the matching with jetblue and the other airlines but google really isn't competing with M$, yet.
<pepp^> kawfee: you still have ot make sure the work gets done. and smart people are around
<roods> why can't i have this in my method signature? boost::shared_ptr<POLTable> pAppendTable = NULL
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: is google in the works to be a software company in ranks with M$?
<ricebowl> kawfee - yes, seriously, I worked for about a year on a project which allows us to instrument x86 code
<ZorbaTHut> kawfee, MS is trying to compete with Google, if you haven't noticed MSn.
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: I haven't
<kawfee> MSN?
<kawfee> What is MSN doing?
<_nv> MSN search
<ZorbaTHut> http://search.msn.com/
<kawfee> I try to live in my bubble as much as possible.
<Zeromus-X> or, a better question -- if I'm trying to read in 100k lines from a file, each having four entries, could I even do that with an array matrix? of course it crashes when using varName[100000][4].
<ZorbaTHut> any of that look familiar? :P
<_nv> they actually bought the hardware and started working on the software to be able to compete with Google. Late to the show.
<kawfee> If you ask me askjeeves.com is more of a threat than msn search
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: this is funny
<ZorbaTHut> there's also MSN Maps now
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: M$ is such a monster that they can take on anyone. Google might just be big enough to take them down.
<pepp^> Actually, all of that google/ig gmail MS had done much before.
<kawfee> MSN had gmail?
<pepp^> Google only trumped everyone in search technology
<ZorbaTHut> pepp, MS's email systems didn't have even close to the features that gmail did
<_nv> you'll love this story. So when MSN Search came out, msft put up posters all over saying how you can type things like, "What is the average temperature in Honolulu" and get answers. I tried, it doesn't work at all.
<xdank-> start.com stuff
<pepp^> kawfee: web based email, hotmail has been there for a long time.
<kawfee> pepp^: that's because of their algorithm.
<ZorbaTHut> or the storage space.
<kawfee> pepp^: Its all about the algorithm.
<ZorbaTHut> (which I'm still entertained about - we announced that on april fool's day just to **** with people)
<kawfee> pepp^: but gmail has a gig
<ZorbaTHut> kawfee, 2.5g
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: anounce what?
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: I have 2.5 gig now?
<pepp^> kawfee: ya who cares.
<ZorbaTHut> kawfee, gmail. We announced "We're going to give everyone A GIGABYTE OF STORAGE" on april fool's
<ZorbaTHut> and a bunch of people thought it was just an april fool's joke
<kawfee> oh
<ZorbaTHut> but then the next day we were still announcing it. :)
<pepp^> What are you gonna do with so much space? I have 250 at hotmail and its still only 4% used and I've been using it since 8 yrs
<kawfee> hah
<ZorbaTHut> and yes, you have 2.66gb, looks like
<MachinShi> i still don't like the way storing works in gmail.
<ZorbaTHut> go to www.gmail.com and watch it tick up.
<MachinShi> i prefer folders over the label'ing ****
<[proxy]> ZorbaTHut: i loved the "infinity + 1" ad too :)
<kawfee> ZorbaTHut: how much space do they really have? everyone really isn't going to use all 2.5 yet.
<ZorbaTHut> you get about 5 more bytes every second. :)
