<Envador> Rizard, outlook express sends via smtp, webmail is sent direct from server
<Envador> some ISPs block access to all smtp port 25's besides their own smtp server.
<Envador> (road runner in austin used to do that)
<Envador> also, you might have him check the "my smtp server requires authentication"

<rworks> There's no configuration necessary.
<rworks> Install them to the same exchange organization (you can only have one exchange org per forest) and you're done.
<Phoenix--> I thought so too but neither exchange server will send mail to other
<Phoenix--> it's as if they both think they're soley responsible for all e-mails in the domain
<Phoenix--> server1.mydomain.com and server2.mydomain.com both handle mail for mydomain.com, but neither will route messages to the other
<Phoenix--> i get an immediate failure notice saying that the mailbox doesn't exist

<Phoenix--> yeah, my old exchange server is so broken that event viewer doesn't show any events - it's completely white

<Phoenix--> i'm starting to hate the phrase "make sure dns is setup correctly" - i've looked at probably 50 different ways to set it up but no matter what i change nothing works

<Phoenix--> i can get on the internet and ping all of the computers in the domain and anyhting else outside but i can't two computers that sit right next to each other to exchange e-mail or replicate
<rworks> You have a DNS server (probably a domain controller) for the domain.

<rworks> And you should probably have a backup.
<rworks> Make sure every computer in the domain uses those two DNS servers.
<Phoenix--> for now, but i'm going to decom that dc when i'm done w/ exchange
<rworks> Don't ever use external or public DNS servers.
<Phoenix--> oh yeah, the new exchange server is the alt dns server
<Phoenix--> nope, everyting's internal
<rworks> Well, the event logs are your first and best troubleshooting tools.
<rworks> Can you access the event logs of the old server from the new server?
<rworks> Have you tried that?
<Phoenix--> the other weird things going on include that the ex2k server (old one) can't send mail to hotmail and a few other sites - same symptoms - it just sits in the queue until it expires

<rworks> You said the other issue was that you got an NDR saying the mailbox doesn't exist.
<rworks> Mailbox doesn't exist should immediately bounce, it shouldn't sit in a queue.

<Phoenix--> if I send an e-mail to an account on the other computer using the address book it immediately bounces as NDR
<Phoenix--> whereas if i type user@mydomain.com is sits int he queue

<Phoenix--> to see if the 2 servers will talk that way
<rworks> The servername shouldn't be part of an SMTP address.

<Phoenix--> rworks, when i registered the comuter names w/ the university, they also setup mx records for each so there is an mx record for mailserver1.mydomain.edu, 1 for mailserver2.mydomain.edu, and 1 for mydomain.edu that points to mail1 pri 10 and mail2 pri 20.
