<DortoH> is this an internal or external message? <|asp> external <|asp> internal messages will send over 10MB <|asp> i'm trying to send from outside in right now <|asp> any idea? <|asp> i even tried specifying a limit of 1GB in a user's settings in AD, but no luck <djjsin> hey, ok so since sp2 installs IMF <djjsin> i went ahead and removed IMF befoer i installed service pack 2 <djjsin> so I installed service pack 2, and when I go look under the message delivery, I see the IMF tab with the IMF options, but under the smtp protocol i do not see the imf to enable it on my smtp connector <djjsin> any idea how to do this <djjsin> cause emails now dont get a scl marked to em, i'm ***uming because its not enabled on the smtp connector <DortoH> |asp it is probably your external email providers limit <djjsin> has anyone used service pack 2? <djjsin> is anyone in the room? <DortoH> here and not yet <djjsin> damn <djjsin> they changed how the IMF works, and now i cant figure out how to enable it on the smtp protocol <DortoH> djjsin right-clikc the SMTP Virtual server go to properties <DortoH> click on Advacned next to the IP or All Un***igned <DortoH> http://thelazyadmin.com/images/exch/recip-filter-2.jpg <DortoH> the end of this article shows the steps http://thelazyadmin.com/index.php?/archives/245-Configure-a-Tarpit-for-Exchange-2003.html <djjsin> AHHH <djjsin> thanks so much <DortoH> no problemo <DortoH> did you install sp2 into a production enviroment? <djjsin> sort of <djjsin> its my exchange server at home <DortoH> cool <djjsin> which houses a woping 1 email account <djjsin> LOL <DortoH> heh sounds familiar <djjsin> ya i'll probubly do it to my companies this weekend or next, since its no longer a preview <Adonis> sup dudes <DortoH> sup Adonis <Adonis> sup DortoH <DortoH> nuttin, making some food <Adonis> what kind <DortoH> grilled chees sammiches <Adonis> nice and easy <djjsin> for anyone that has seen my pain for the past couple days' trying to get my IMF to mark the SCL on messages. I have found the problem. Turns out there's a bug in exchange 2003 service pack 1 and the filter, where it doesnt scan messages, if the NETBIOS name of the exchange server is 15 characters or more, which in my case it was 15 characters. Microsoft has a hotfix available for this <Adonis> hey DortoH <Adonis> you wake <Adonis> or anybody else <Adonis> lol <DortoH> sup <Adonis> hey DortoH <Adonis> tell me something real fast <Adonis> I got a server with 33 gigs total <Adonis> and uses up 22 gigs of it <Adonis> my backup needs another disk at 22 gig mark <Adonis> I have not selected a few folders I don't need <Adonis> and the page file <Adonis> which is 2 gig by itself <Adonis> it backups 22 gig and need another tape <Adonis> am I like going crazy or what <Adonis> it's only when I don't backup the Exchange is when it actually completes <Adonis> is there some **** where it's backing up **** twice <DortoH> what kind of tape is it? <Adonis> 4mm <Adonis> 20/40 <Adonis> not a dlt <Adonis> HP something <Adonis> I am sure it's quantum <DortoH> yeah well that 40GB is a max based on estimated 2:1 compression <DortoH> but the compression level is dependant on a lot of stuff <Adonis> yeah but <DortoH> you rarely get 2:1 <Adonis> it's backing up 22 gigs <Adonis> and <Adonis> according to my drive <Adonis> it only has 22 gigs on it <Adonis> total <Adonis> so if I don't select the page file alone which is 2 gigs <Adonis> it should only be backing up 20 gigs right? <DortoH> i guess, i'd take a look at the job and see whats going on <DortoH> your guesstimate is off, or your backup is not working properly <Adonis> now I am going to not select some of the larger email boxes <Adonis> and see what happens <Adonis> although I don't like doing that <[ytfor]> does MS have an Exchange newsgroup? <|asp> is there a recommended size for drives running exchange 2k3 on its own box? I think there's gonna be a raid 1 array for the os, and a raid 5 for the exchange database <WrldBFree> asp depends on the size of the organization <WrldBFree> It hink there is a formula to calculate ideal storage space based on certain criteria <Adonis> raid 1 for the OS? <DortoH> sure <Adonis> so ike 5 drives in total? <Adonis> what exactly is the advantage to that <DortoH> i've got 6 in my new server <DortoH> 2 for RAID 1 with OS, Page file, queues and transaction logs on seperate partitions <DortoH> and 4 for RAID 10 with stores <Adonis> wouldn't you get a performance increase with the OS being raid 5 <Adonis> versus raid 1 <Adonis> how can 4 drives do a raid 10? <DortoH> 2 mirrors striped = 4 disks <wlse_pro> you'd see the largest increase with RAID 1 <wlse_pro> and since its just OS, its easily replaced <wlse_pro> so striping isn't necessary <Adonis> raid1 is striping <Adonis> isn't it <Adonis> er <Adonis> no <Adonis> mirroring <Adonis> sorry <Adonis> backwards <wlse_pro> err yea me too i think <wlse_pro> damnit <Adonis> yeah I would stripe any of my drives <Adonis> lol unless they were mirrored stripes <wlse_pro> i think he's favoring redundancy rather than performance <DortoH> raid10 gives you the best performance with redundancy <Adonis> I actually thought raid 10 was 2 raid 5 mirrors <wlse_pro> how is raid 10 different from raid 0+1 <Adonis> mirrored <wlse_pro> two striped sets are mirrored <wlse_pro> in raid 0+1 <Adonis> looks like raid 10 is more like 0+0+1 <wlse_pro> as opposed to a single mirror getting striped in raid 10 <Adonis> lol <DortoH> raid 10 is two mirrors that are striped <Adonis> er 1+1+0 <DortoH> its ideal for database applications <wlse_pro> http://www.acnc.com/04_01_10.html <wlse_pro> there we go <wlse_pro> now i got it <Adonis> but you can't add to it right <wlse_pro> i thought disk rebuilds in raid 5 were somewhat trivial <wlse_pro> due to the fact its the controller handling it <wlse_pro> i dunno about that link now <Adonis> I get this quote back for VPN connection <Adonis> $150 for 4 cat 5 cables <Adonis> come on <wlse_pro> io'll make you 4 cat 5 cables for 10 bucks. <Adonis> sad <Adonis> hey wlse_pro you do any cisco stuff <wlse_pro> < -- <wlse_pro> wlse <wlse_pro> wireless lan solution engine <wlse_pro> running into the office real quick <wlse_pro> be back in 30 <e-vad> exchange2003, if i need to look into a particular mail box for a particular e-mail <e-vad> what do i do <e-vad> be nice, i bleed easily <|asp> anyone have any experience or recommendations for a good network monitoring tool which will also allow you to monitor your WAN connection <nef-w2> i am in regtrace hell <nef-w2> looking at traces for 3 days to find an obscure bug probably caused by peoplesoft <nef-w2> awesome <mdasilva> e-vad i believe you can access it via UNC \\.\BackOfficeStorage\mail.namespace <nef-w2> mdasilva: do NOT access the store like this <mdasilva> no? <nef-w2> if you need to access a specific mail, open the mailbox via mapi <mdasilva> i never had a need in 2003
