<Petie> can anyone recommend a good book on a beginner to J2EE?
<Epesh> loke_: exadel.com, nitrox.com, jdeveloper
<joeblowgt> you know, netbeans 5 isn't all that bad
<waz> I keep meaning to try it out
<Epesh> it's pretty good but still has some holes
<joeblowgt> I like the webservice client/service build tools
<joeblowgt> but I wish you could plugin axis instead of sun's ws ****
<joeblowgt> the client wizard wants to force me to use jaxrpc for some reason
<joeblowgt> I just want to build a quick client from the wsdl of my service
<Epesh> joeblowgt: it seems pretty quick though
<joeblowgt> for any of you doing soap - what do you do with collections?
<Epesh> does it still not manage namespaces?
<Epesh> joeblowgt: convert to arrays
<xd> use arrays to be portable
<joeblowgt> yeah - I figured. jaxrpc worked well with vectors and hashtables
<Epesh> joeblowgt: in netbeans 4, if you use "String" (as opposed to java.lang.String) it would use a com.sun.*.String instead of java.lang
<joeblowgt> but it generated code using fully qualified names instead of imports. ie. java.lang.String foo = null;
<joeblowgt> I haven't found a soap tool that lets me test a webservice that takes arrays
<joeblowgt> even the famous xmlspy doesn't work
<joeblowgt> and it's the best database in the world!
<joeblowgt> how timely: http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=37238
<Epesh> joeblowgt: hahaha
<waz> tss on the cutting edge
<joeblowgt> haha - tss poster: "I think we should revalidate ***umptions of CORBA being .complex. and SOAP being .simple. . both are untrue."
<Epesh> note that TSS is finally able to count: th off-by-one comment count crap is gone
<Epesh> It's still a, uh, suboptimal implementation, but hey, at least it's correct
<joeblowgt> someone stick a -1 in there?
<Epesh> yeah
<Epesh> amazing, huh?
<loke_> joeblowgt: I'm reading the link you posted
<loke_> joeblowgt: Is the guy stupid?
<joeblowgt> better yet: public static final int ONE = 1; post -= ONE; // no magic numbers!
<Epesh> joeblowgt: the sad thing is that it's still looking at the size of the set, instead of having the DB do it
<joeblowgt> forgive my typing - my fingers are freezing
<Epesh> so it has to load the entire set to get that number
<Epesh> anyway, I'm off
<joeblowgt> stored procedures!
<jjava> stored procedures is also half retarded
<boxed> epesh: doesn't it load the entire set anyhow?
<Epesh> boxed: currently? yes. That's the problem.
<Epesh> It's using ORM when it shouldn't.
<loke_> joeblowgt: seriously... you don't agree with the guy are you?
<Epesh> boxed: it'd be far better off doing a join in SQL to capture the count of comments
<websherif> and they are using tapestry :) heh.. but what I have heard, are the problems not due to tapestry...
<Epesh> tapestry introduces some issues, yes
<Epesh> but that particular problem isn't tapestry's fault
<xd> try soapui?
<joeblowgt> I want a tool to query a wsdl and built a form to let me enter inputs and return the output
<joeblowgt> simple services are easy, but I can't find one to take an array
<websherif> Epesh, how are you involved in the tss site?
<Epesh> websherif: I'm not
<Epesh> joeblowgt: GLUE!
<websherif> ok :) you just know stuff like that
<Epesh> websherif: I'm the editor in chief for TSS
<Epesh> in all honesty
<joeblowgt> except he doesn't wear a head dress
<joeblowgt> not a single feather up there
<Epesh> joeblowgt: I just didn't wear one THERE
<Epesh> I'm wearing it now
<Huvet> hmm... I have a lot of values in a HashMap (key -> val) and now I would like to get the ones with the highest val, any smart ideas of how to do this?
<websherif> Epesh, what did you think of the switch to tapestry on tss?
<Epesh> websherif: was before my time on TSS
<websherif> ah, ok
<joeblowgt> "09:11:14 : ERROR : Error importing wsdl: http://localhost:8080/services/Hello?wsdl:0: error: src-resolve: type '@http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' not found.
<joeblowgt> I'd say soapui isn't up to snuff
<websherif> well then, what do you think of it now?
<xd> ah well
<websherif> webwork would have been a better choice? ;)
<MXV> websherif: the editor in cheif is only responsible for the content.. not for the content to actually show up on a working site
<MXV> which is why TSS is allowed all the downtime on the planet plus some
<websherif> I know, but I just wanted his opinion on the switch
<MXV> confession
<jjava> xd: I can't believe you would say 'I broke up with my chick of 3 yearS about 2 years ago. I don't see her often because she lives in another state now. Whenever she is in town though, I want to see her and cum on her back again. CUMBACK!!!!' to someone like loke_
<Epesh> websherif: I think the conversion had problems
<ech> whats with the diplomatic answers ;)
<ech> drop the professionalism!
<Epesh> it had problems. They weren't necessarily technical problems.
<shaggy-h> hey ech
<ech> :)
<ech> shaggy-h: we forgot to organise drinks whilst fate was still here! :[
<shaggy-h> ah crap he's left already? didn't realise that
<ech> yeah, yesterday
<Epesh> The conversion to Tapestry's biggest problem was that it was never completed.
<shaggy-h> bummer... but we can still organise drinks without him of course :)
<Epesh> and completing it would involve a LOT of work.
<ech> yup, good idea :)
<fate> bastards
<jjava> bastards are doing it again!!!!
<websherif> Epesh, That is what I was thinking.. Was howard to expencive? :P
<Epesh> websherif: no
<shaggy-h> fate: it's ok, we'll have one for you
<Epesh> websherif: organizational change at the company
<fate> oh that makes it ok then
<ech> haha
<fate> shaggy-h: I'm off beer!
<fate> shaggy-h: my six month binge is over
<ech> or according to your current drinking habits, about 20 for you
<Epesh> websherif: they had a do-or-die date to meet, and they met it... and never quite finished
<fate> mumble
<Epesh> websherif: i.e., integration testing was left at the functional testing level, not QA
<fate> surely howard's unit tests handle everything!
<fate> QA is for girls!
<shaggy-h> fate: you drunkard!
<fate> shaggy-h: SIGH
<Epesh> Scalability's for girls too, and apparently TSS is all guys
<websherif> Epesh, ok :) thanks for the information. gotta go!
<Epesh> woohoo, I scared him off at last!
<shaggy-h> nothing but nothing can be as bad as this ASP.NET hell I have found myself in today
<Epesh> I bet it can
<boxed> ha! I'm working with the windows cluster API right now
<fate> you both so deserve it
<ordain> boxed: btw, where's your office located physically?
<fate> I defecate in your beer's general direction
<shaggy-h> fate: too late, I drank it already :P
<fate> there's still an empty gl***, don't ruin my fun
<shaggy-h> not sure what I'm going to do with this pint of poo though
<fate> hm, that's the second time that comes up
<boxed> coming to visit?
<fate> I think I dared someone at drinks the other night with ech to poo into a beer
<ordain> boxed: I might start working near Albano if you know where that is
<ordain> not very close, but not so far
<shaggy-h> fate: did you log on to TSS afterwards?
<fate> no, I'm not THAT stupid
<shaggy-h> fate: don't make me trawl through those TSS logs...
<fate> I didn't! honest!
<boxed> ordain: ah, yea that's fairly close anyhow... I used to train iaido at johannes skola before they moved to LHS
<Epesh> actually, I don't remember ever seeing fate's name on TSS
<Epesh> anyway, I'm off
<ordain> boxed: not signed to start there yet, but might start in just a couple of weeks
<ech> fate: it didn't work though
<ech> fate: hah i sent a mean email to mxlogic
<ech> and the guy phoned me back yesterday :)
<fate> bastard
<fate> did you make them cry again?
<ech> i swear they emply the people who do voices for hold lines etc
<boxed> cool, we should take a beer sometime if you start there... or a coke in my case but whatever
<ech> i keep thinking i'm talking to a recorded message
<ech> they're EXACTLY like that
