<czaveri> of what uses is the live cd?
<czaveri> i downloaded gentoo yesterday and got a bonus of live cd...
<czaveri> i dont quite understand of what use can i put it to
<graz> dog toy
<Phaid> coaster
<graz> smoke two joints and put it in the microwave ove, be entertained
<czaveri> if i cant think of anything... :-( that i can do with this cd
<Phaid> use it to level a wobbly chair
<czaveri> ... come on guys give me some idea...
<Phaid> the idea with a livecd is you boot it and there it is, everything you need is on the disc
<Phaid> they're good to use as rescue diskc
<Phaid> disks
<czaveri> does it have perl, c, c++ ... etc?
<Phaid> like, say you mess up your boot loader, you can boot with the livecd, mount your hd partitions, and fix the problem
<czaveri> oh ok, thanks Phaid
<czaveri> can i somehow make perl and bash available on live cd?
<Dulak> yeah, the "distro-on-cd" livecds have perl and bash, like knoppix
<Dulak> bash is on most of them, btw
<czaveri> thanks Dulak
<czaveri> going away for sometime to try out the gentoo live cd
<czaveri> thanks all
<bobbob> So I have gentoo set to startup in runlevel 5, and I get this error: 'Could not get dependency info for "kdm" Please run: /sbin/depscan.sh to try and fix this problem.' I put "/sbin/depscan.sh" in the local script but that didn't seem to fix it. Any clue what's wrong?"
<Dulak> it means run depscan.sh to find the dependency problem
<Dulak> so just run depscan.sh as root and see what it tells you
<bobbob> doesn't say a damn thing. just "* Caching service dependencies ... [ ok ]"
<Dulak> nifty
<bobbob> and i said "I put "/sbin/depscan.sh" in the local script but that didn't seem to fix it."
<graz> well ****ing lame, no pgsql odbc driver in OO
<Dulak> it wouldn't
<bobbob> why not?
<Dulak> because it's scanning dependencies in the init files, and if the init file is correct that happens automagically from the depend() function of the init script
<Dulak> my guess is there is something goofy in /etc/init.d/kdm, maybe it's missing the depend() function?
<bobbob> hmm... that'd be weird since i haven't touched the script since install, but oh well
<Dulak> I have no idea, I'm just saying running depscan.sh from the script won't do anything because it gets run as part of the depend() function automatically
<Dulak> did you update and not run dispatch-conf?
<Dulak> or etc-update, depending
<bobbob> never heard of dispatch-conf
<Dulak> it's like etc-update but better
<bobbob> Hm, ok, I'll give it a try
<bobbob> thanks
<usey> Hi. How can I divide one of my partitions and clear it up for the sake of another OS? (like Partition Magic on Win32).
<faze> usey, what distro u usin?
<graz> non-destructive?
<faze> faze, test
<faze> ok.. testin' nick complete
<usey> faze, eh. the box's running some Mandriva, I think.
<usey> faze?
<faze> usey, http://part-gui.sourceforge.net/
<faze> try that
<faze> usey, u still there ?
<usey> yeah. I'm checking out the "screenshots".
<faze> yea, it's a good gui based util
<faze> makes it easier for beginners rather than the command line based partition utils.
<graz> lalalala
<bigs> I like my web site so bite me
<Idle`> bigs: what?
<Idle`> tubgirl? I dont like that
<bigs> newonet.biz
<bigs> i think it was hard to make in html
<bigs> im just learning it
<Idle`> holy crap. someone just emailed me about a booking system I did a year ago, asking if they can get a copy of it
<WWoe> on slack, if my cron.weekly directory is empty now. I make a file called crontab edit it and put in 30 4 * * 0 /usr/bin/updatedb -c 1> /dev/null. will it work ? update my 'locate' database once a week ?
<graz> there should already be a cron script for that
<graz> in cron.daily
<graz> -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 31 2002-04-15 23:09 /etc/cron.daily/slocate*
<Idle`> generally you update locate every night, but meh
<dragonk> :se noai
<WWoe> yeah, I have slocate. /usr/bin/updatedb -c
<dragonk> eeh, sorry
<dragonk> damned terminal froze
<WWoe> hmm, wtf. my /var/lib/slocate dir is empty
<WWoe> should I make a 'slocate' file and /usr/bin/updatedb -c ?
<WWoe> what then?
<graz> 1) run updatedb 2) confirm /etc/cron.daily/slocate
<WWoe> graz: done. thanks
<WWoe> graz: now it'll update every night?
<Idle`> I should really install locate on my machines
<graz> p*** on the chili
<graz> got meatloaf, mashed potatos, and beans/carrots
<graz> *bUrP*
<Idle`> hah
<Idle`> I'm gonna go to wendys and get me chili and a frosty
<graz> wonder why his cron wasnt running /etc/cron.daily/slocate to begin with
<graz> unless he's not had the machine at the time of the cron job
<graz> err on
<Idle`> or perhaps cron wasn't running
<Idle`> I know I dont have a cron daemon on my laptop
<aslan> Idle`, hello, how goes it? long time no read. how is school going? how is your pet bird?
<Idle`> good, heh
<Idle`> I've gotta head off to my bosses in a bit, we're installing the thin clients
<aslan> Idle`, you still working?
<Idle`> of course
<graz> Idle`: cron is default on slackware
<aslan> Idle`, still going to school?
<Idle`> yea
<aslan> Idle`, so working and going to school.
<Idle`> working just when needed
<Idle`> aslan: remember that booking system I did last year?
<aslan> Idle`, yes
<Idle`> well, I just got an email, someone else wants to use it
<aslan> Idle`, is that a 'good' thing or a 'bad' thing?
<Idle`> good thing
<aslan> Idle`, i scanned some old pictures and put them up on my web server.
<Idle`> ah, cool
<Idle`> bbl, I've gotta get some food
<xzy2ob> how can I check who is connected to my apache server?
<hotnikks> netstat -na | grep ESTABLISHED | grep 80
<hotnikks> good enough
<xzy2ob> thanks
<c0n> lsof -nPi:80 -a -c httpd -a -u nobody
<bobbob> what's a program to open clonecd images in linux?
<c0n> mount
<bobbob> whoa, i thought it only worked with iso
<bobbob> cool
<Idle`> clonecd images are isos
<c0n> wtf is a clonecd
<Idle`> or at least should be
<bobbob> no, clone cd is an IMAGE
<bobbob> not as iso
<Idle`> bobbob: whats the extension
<bobbob> img
<Idle`> ISO is an Image
<Idle`> file blah.img
<bobbob> but image isn't an iso
<Idle`> iso is a image with an iso9660 filesystem on it
<bobbob> ioctl: LOOP_CLR_FD: Device or resource busy
<bobbob> mount: you must specify the filesystem type
<bobbob> ha, i knew it wouldn't work
<Idle`> uh...
<Idle`> losetup /dev/loop0 /path/to/image.img
<Idle`> mount /dev/loop0 /mnt/path
<Idle`> I've gotta package up this thin client... bbl
<bobbob> losetup returned: ioctl: LOOP_SET_FD: Device or resource busy
<Idle`> bobbob: theres the problem...
<c0n> loop1
<Idle`> losetup /dev/loop0
<Idle`> actually
<Idle`> well, I could say to do a for loop... but... yea
<Idle`> try all the loop devices first,
<Idle`> anywho
<crasy> can anyone recommend a good wlan card for linux use, wardriving for me?
<c0n> probably using loop0 for some /var/tmp -> /tmp mount
<bobbob> crasy: my dell truemobile works perfect
<Idle`> crasy: anything with a prism2 (like the orinoco gold wireless cards)
