<Nemes> yeah I never trust it to my body alone when I have a bad chest, I know that I dont have the immune system to beet it when i get a chest infection, so its the doctors everytime.
<JanetB> Katey.... today seems to be better.. than yesterday
<Katey> JanetB, ah, that's good
<JanetB> night time is the worst
<Katey> JanetB, yeah. I know
<Katey> You might consider calling your doc and see if he/she will call in some heavy duty prescription cough medicine
<JanetB> but it got really bad thursday night... maybe that was the breaking point
<Katey> They have some stuff that tastes like turpentine but works really well. :)
<Nemes> heh
<FreeTrade> Hey, I got a cold recently and you all know what a skeptic I am, I have been telling people echinacea was worthless for years before they proved it in a couple major studies, but this zinc formula which come in like a throat lozenge, take it immediately when you beging to have cold symptoms and it can reduce the duration of the cold, my was knocked out in 2 days.. It has had medical studies which have shown that it works.
<Katey> JanetB, my son ended up in the ER Thursday night with breathing problems
<JanetB> katey.. well he actually gave me 2 z-pacs... cause I normally have to have 2 rounds when I get broncitis
<FreeTrade> I wish I remembered the name.
<US-Male> cold-eeze
<Herzen> I really don't like using meds
<Katey> I wonder if allergens at this time of year are aggravating people's health
<US-Male> zinc gluconate
<JanetB> so.. he said.. aww I will give you 2... just take the second one in 2 weeks
<Herzen> Katey, i've had a dry cough for about 3 weeks
<FreeTrade> my = mine
<Herzen> because of allergens
<Nemes> Katey, :(
<Katey> Herzen, have you tried any over the counter allergy meds?
<Katey> Some are pretty good
<Nemes> Katey, get him checked for asthma
<Katey> Claritin helps
<FreeTrade> Herzen, I didnt use any meds for 15 years. not even aspirin.
<Herzen> They don't help my chest symptoms
<Katey> Nemes, Yeah, we're going to the regular doctor on monday afternoon
<FreeTrade> Then a couple things forced me into taking medications.
<Nemes> yeah
<FreeTrade> It was that or stop working,
<Herzen> FreeTrade, eh I'm not an old man like you yet =)
<FreeTrade> Herzen haha.
<Herzen> 29 this nov
<KoooK> Herzen: I'm gonna buy this http://www.biltema.se/products/product.asp?iItemId=98966
<Katey> Well I try to have a balanced approach to medication. I prefer to avoid it if possible, but I won't hesitate if it's necessary
<Herzen> KoooK, nice
<JanetB> I have fought with broncitis all my life... I have to wonder.. why it seems worse when I get it now.. must be age! :S
<JanetB> D
<Nemes> Koook, air humidifier or purifier or somehting is it?
<KoooK> Nemes yea humid thingy
<Nemes> yeah thought so
<Katey> When my daughter was a baby she had lots of ear infections. The doctor recomended having tubes inserted in her ears. One of the reasons I consented was that I was becoming uneasy about all of the antibiotics she had been taking
<Nemes> i have never tried them, i dont know if they work or not
<KoooK> neither have I
<Herzen> When I become powerful
<Herzen> I'm going to build a sauna with a computer in it
<JanetB> Katey.. my daughter had to have tubes also
<Herzen> have like the actual computer etc on the other side of the wall
<JanetB> but she was 7
<Herzen> and the monitor behind like a plastic shield
<Herzen> and a nice keyb
<Herzen> and mouse
<Katey> JanetB, there's still a lot of back and forth controversy among doctors about how effective it is. But I know it stopped my daughter from getting infections.
<Nemes> tubes a perm thing or temp?
<JanetB> it is so hard washing there hair and not getting a bit of water in the ears
<Katey> Nemes, they fall out on their own eventually
<Nemes> ahhh
<Katey> in most cases, at least
<Nemes> ok
<JanetB> katey.. she never has had another ear infection.. so for her it was a good thing
<Katey> Yeah. Years after the tubes, she did have another infection, but it was while we all had the flu, so it was part of all of that
<JanetB> they has to remove my daughters. but it is not hard. they just pull them out
<Katey> And she never gets them anymore
<FreeTrade> I regret though my days of unfounded disbelief in medication, believing I was tougher because I didn't use them, because my sister would stop taking her meds (based a lot on my disaproval) and she would have sever psychotic episodes. I hurt her by my extremist and silly attitude. I later learned a lot more about a lot of medicines and how they work and I now encourage her to take her medications she hasnt had a serious psychotic
<Herzen> i've had an ear infection like once in my life
<Herzen> it ****ed
<Herzen> and the soviets gave me ****ty antibiotics
<FreeTrade> Katey, well most ear infections are viral
<Herzen> that made me sicker then a dog
<Katey> Herzen, yeah, they hurt like crazy
<JanetB> ear infections really hurt
<Katey> FreeTrade, no.
<Katey> Some are though
<Katey> Many are bacterial
<Herzen> I was like 6-7
<FreeTrade> They give the anti biotic based on the chance it might be bacterial.
<Herzen> and I remember it vividly
<Katey> I've had problems with my ears since I was 19
<KoooK> 10 years ago I had a very crappy pneumonia. 42 degree celsius, water in my lungs, coughed blood, own wing at the hospital etc. took me 6 weeks to get ok, months to get better and years to get off medicin
<FreeTrade> Most are viral
<Nemes> FreeTrade, doctors can do some wodnerfull things nowadays
<Katey> And they never improve without antibiotics
<FreeTrade> But they treat most of them with antibiotics.
<Nemes> we really are fairly lucky
<Katey> FreeTrade, Some are viral
<JanetB> wow KoooK
<FreeTrade> Nemes, Amen to that.
<Katey> Many are not
<Nemes> when it comes to medicine
<JanetB> thats scary
<Katey> And docs often will give meds to kids to keep their parents happy
<Katey> When all that's really going on is fluid in the ear
<JanetB> well I asked for my daughter to have surgery, after years of ear infections
<JanetB> and I am glad I did it :)
<JanetB> poor kid was always in pain, before that
<Katey> When their ears are full of puss, that's bacterial
<JanetB> it was also effecting her hearing, and her ability to learn, cause she was sick all the time
<Nemes> they're very painfull as wella re ear infections from what i can remember of the one I had many many many years ago
<Katey> JanetB, yeah, my daughter was 7 months old when she had tubes inserted
<Nemes> cant touch the ear of anything
<Katey> She had had like 8-10 ear infections
<Nemes> and the pain goes right around the side of your head into the jaw
<Nemes> stuff like that#
<KoooK> Nemes yep real annoying they can be
<Katey> Nemes, yep
<JanetB> Katey, yeah my daughter had her first ear infection at 3 weeks old
<KoooK> afk
<FreeTrade> Acute otitis media
<FreeTrade> Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, which can be either acute or chronic. Children are most commonly affected by acute otitis media because it is caused by colds and blocked eustachian tubes - both typical ailments of childhood. The infectious agent can be either viral or bacterial, with research suggesting that viruses are responsible for most cases. Sometimes the eardrum will burst, leading to pus in the ear canal,
<FreeTrade> Pain-killing drugs
<FreeTrade> Antibiotics, if the infection is bacterial in origin
<FreeTrade> Eardrops, if there is pus in the ear canal.
<FreeTrade> Nevertheless..
<JanetB> but 25 years ago, they did not do the surgerys and I did not know about them.. till she was 7
<JanetB> and had a friend, who's daughter had it
<FreeTrade> So antibiotics will work on bacterial ear but not on viral ear aches.
<Katey> Small children have teeny eustation tubes. So they get blocked easily
<FreeTrade> But one cause is too small a tube
<FreeTrade> so inserting a tube would make sense.
<Nemes> you know there is allot of talk about us actually being too clean with our kids and not letting them get dirty enough to build up tollerances to bacteria and bugs.
<Katey> The pressure hurts. But the fluid trapped inside can begin to grow bacteria
<SweetLeaf> I have had a virus for months still sick but on the mend finally
<JanetB> her were not blocked, they were not growing properly
<Nemes> like kids used to play i mean when compared to tdays kids.
<FreeTrade> Yep..
<FreeTrade> But with a lot of medications they can get immunities with out getting sick.
<Nemes> yeah
<FreeTrade> Like the new chicken pox medicine.. When I was a kid every got it sooner or later.
<Katey> Unfortunately, docs will write prescriptions even when no bacteria is present, but there's fluid
<FreeTrade> Today kids can be immunized against it.
<Katey> Yeah. That was weird. The chicken pox vaccine
<Katey> I was undecided for awhile about whether or not to have my kids vaccinated against chicken pox
<JanetB> man I just drank 1qt 8oz of water in 30 minutes!
<FreeTrade> and the truth is a lot of virus's dont repeat themselves they consistantly mutate. especially frequent ones which are epidemic like flu and colds.
<Nemes> i panicked myself for a while when they came out with all that stuff about the 3 in 1 vaccine maybe being bad for kids.
<Nemes> but in the end my little lad had it and he is fine
<FreeTrade> Katey I had scars and 2 weeks of hell which I remember in 6th grade from chicken pox.
<Katey> I had hears so many stories about how much more miserable chicken pox is for adults...and I didn't want to vaccinate them, only to have it lose effectiveness later in life and have them get the chicken pox then
<JanetB> the MMR.. Nemes?
<Nemes> yeah
<JanetB> yeah.. I remember that :)
<FreeTrade> And not they have anti menningitis vaccines, I RAN to the doctor when they started offering those.
<FreeTrade> since they are major killers of children every year
<Katey> yeah, mine both got that
<FreeTrade> But its best to not overpopulate, not to touch your hands to your nose. The Asians who bow instead of shaking hands, are much mroe intelligent in regards to that custom than we in the west.
<FreeTrade> I wish we would bow instead of shake hands.
<SweetLeaf> anyone ever had the mumps
<Nemes> heh nvr thought of it that before FT
