<occ> exactly
<bud``> they sell radios, police scanners, other big $$ items that they make huge profits on
<occ> a couple of my friends worked at various high-volume radioshacks for several years
<Estuary> i can't either. though i do know the seem to have pioneered the data-collection of customers.
<Lupine> bud: yea.. i actually go to a huge service center now. One of the guys there will sell me parts that I can't wait for
<occ> the #1 item is, as noted, batteries
<Estuary> used to be u coudln't buy a roll of wire w/o getting profiled at the register.
<bud``> lol
<bud``> i hated having to ask people for their info
<Estuary> hah
<occ> the thing everyone buys at radioshack that has a high markup: cell-phone batteries and other "specific" batteries
<occ> huge markup
<bud``> and it wasnt even to send em a catalog anymore, they had to PAY for catalogs
<Lupine> oh man, I always had fun with that.
<L0c0> al-zarqawi's threat to the US is now equal to that of Bin Laden's...great
<Lupine> "123 F Uck lane"
<L0c0> ****s
<Estuary> also, radioshack makes their own 'brand' of crappy electronic toys...i think the whole chain lives and dies by Q4
<Lupine> Estuary: every so often, radio shack would offer the exact same product as a brand name.. for a steal
<Estuary> yeah
<bud``> radio shacks 'Optimus' brand was actually just JVC or Philips, cant remember which one
<Estuary> yeah
<bud``> same high quality
<Lupine> several I remember: Tandy had several car amplifiers, that were an Alphasonic and then a PPI Sedona amplifier. Exactly the same, made by the same people. Just different silkscreening
<Katey> They still ask for all your info at Radioshack
<Estuary> the quality of their branded good ranges from horribly ****ty to pretty nice.
<Lupine> estuary: yep, you had to know the "deals".
<occ> they stopped, katy!
<bud``> I made seriously good money working at radio shack over a christmas shopping season once. made tons of commission on all the stuff i sold.. all those stupid radio controlled cars that blew out the door at $100 a piece
<Lupine> Radioshack used to sell a knockoff of the BOSE 901's.. used the exact same speakers, different cabinet
<Katey> occ, well, they must have stopped very recently because I had to replace a cellphone and went to their store...and they asked for all my info
<occ> BOSE: buy our $300 radio
<Katey> and this was in like...March
<Estuary> i think radioshack has name-recognition with a lot of people, too. also, there is something nice about not having to go to a ****ing megastore with half the suburban population of your town being there at the same time.
<Lupine> Estuary: Well.. not now.. but it used to be that Radioshack was the hot-place for new technology and gadgets
<Lupine> You went there to buy the new radio's, etc
<occ> and the newest Tandy computers
<Estuary> lupine - true.
<Lupine> occ: oh damn, forgot all that!
<occ> hehe
<bmc> you go there for electronics parts
<bmc> circuit boards, capacitors, resistors etc,etc
<bmc> heh
<Lupine> Heck, they used to sell so many "build yourself" kits
<Estuary> lupine - i can't figure out why they even attempt to sell desktop systems....who in their right mind would buy one from em.
<occ> most people who do lots of electronics stuff go to an electronics supplier
<Katey> I usually just order electronics online
<SweetLeaf> you can hardly get parts at radiocrap now
<Katey> I really hate shopping
<Lupine> Estuary: well, back then.. they were the only one selling computers in many towns
<Estuary> yeah
<Katey> I'll go out of my way to avoid it
<occ> and its like "aw crap, i forget to get that part, run by radio shack"
<Estuary> but nowadays
<Estuary> why
<Lupine> occ: Yep.
<bud``> radio shack gets in peoples wallets... when you wanna connect your pc to your stereo and your tv to your comp and etc.. etc.. you goto radioshack thinking about those lil $0.99 connectors they sell, you walk out of there $50 worse off
<Estuary> bud`` - hah true.
<SweetLeaf> Used to be Elmer's working at Radio Shack now they don't speak english
<praxis9> Oops. Maureen Dowd is attacking Judith Miller.
<praxis9> Whoops.
<Katey> yeah, my husband will still go to radioshack for cables and other doo-dads for the computer
<TimothyW> praxis9 : hahaha
<Estuary> they're good at selling electronic impulse buys. oooh light up refrigerator magnet! i'll take seven.
<praxis9> Can anyone say that "the wheels are coming off?"
<praxis9> I thought so.
<Lupine> Heh. I get all my cables custom built for me by a "high end wire company".. heh
<Katey> what are the wheels coming off of now?
<TimothyW> praxis9 : Maureen Dowd is going to get her ***** *** slapped by Judith Miller.
<Estuary> hahah
<Pickle> What wheels?
<Katey> eh. I don't think Miller will have much to say for awhile
<Estuary> Judith Miller is a disgrace. the Times has basically disowned her.
<Pickle> The wheels are long gone.
<TimothyW> Katey : She will.
<occ> a disgrace?
<bmc> you have cables made?
<Katey> TimothyW, what will she say?
<praxis9> The wheels of the whole leftist mythology involving Plamegate.
<Estuary> Judith Miller copped a deal to get out of jail early.
<bmc> heh, you dont have a pair of stripped/crimpers ? :P
<Katey> TimothyW, "I'm a hack"?
<bmc> strippers*
<TimothyW> Katey : no.
<Estuary> so much for "martyr for the first amendment"
<praxis9> There wasn't a deal to "cop."
<Katey> praxis9, how does Dowd attacking Miller establish that?
<Estuary> katey - hahaha
<TimothyW> Katey : She will make another discussion and make it look like Dowd is stuck on stupid.
<Lupine> They are actually well built cables, but he can charge a fortune. Take a typical BNC video: $25 worth of high quality jacks, $10 in high quality cable. ***embled? Sells it for $50/foot
<bmc> its valeriegate
<bmc> :P
<Katey> TimothyW, Miller looks pretty weak these days. I doubt she'll have much to say for awhile. At least not untill whatever book she cobbles together hits the shelves
<Estuary> praxis9 - hate to break it to ya, but your proclamations are wildly optimistic.
<praxis9> Katey: Oh, come on. Two New York Times reporters going at it with personal attacks? The standard mythology has been that Miller went to jail to protect her source.
<Estuary> katey - ahahah no kidding. well said.
<Katey> praxis9, Miller was writing stories supportive of administration policy.
<TimothyW> Katey : Miller is stronger than Maureen Dowd.
<praxis9> She didn't do any such thing. And she didn't -as the left insisted she would - nail Rove or Libby.
<Katey> praxis9, and Dowd isn't a reporter, she's a columnist
<Swigert> hey
<praxis9> She's the latest liberal ******in.
<Estuary> praxis9 - that's MILLER'S mythology. if you actaully read the Times, they've essentially disowned her.
<Estuary> read it.
<Katey> praxis9, Dowd has been around for a long time
<Estuary> stop repeating your puerile ***umptions.
<praxis9> Poor liberals. You aren't going to get Rove or Libby. You aren't going to get anything out of this.
<Katey> I have no idea what will come of the Plame investigation
<Swigert> praxis9: their rage is their reward
<Katey> But I think that you're confused about who Miller and Dowd are.
<Estuary> NY Times' editor has said it was wrong of them to defend her over their obligations to their readership, particularly since she was MISLEADING (lying) to them.
<TimothyW> Katey : we will have to wait to Friday.
<praxis9> See? Before Miller was a great hero. Oh, yes! But now? She's a liar.
<praxis9> Haha
<Katey> praxis9, who's hero was she?
<praxis9> My how things change.
<bmc> she is a liar
<Katey> praxis9, I think you might be confused about Miller
<bmc> and pretty stupid
<TimothyW> I know who Maureen Dowd and Judith Miller is.
<Katey> praxis9, I don't know of anyone who considered Miller a hero
<bmc> sitting in jail for 90 days for her 'convictions'
<praxis9> Don't act obtuse. I read the articles about how Miller went to jail for the First Amendment.
<Estuary> haha
<Katey> praxis9, she went to jail to protect her source
<praxis9> We all are familiar with the little stories that have been bandied about.
<Estuary> praxis9 - on the NY Times was essentially stringing that line along.
<Katey> praxis9, well I'm sure not
<Katey> praxis9, and liberals don't like Miller at all
<Katey> so...
<Lupine> praxis: and then claimed she was there until her "source" gave her permission to speak [ whoops, that was given a year ago ]
<Katey> I think you've got your wires crossed
<bmc> best piece of advice anyone can make use of
<Estuary> everybody else abandoned it once it was clear that miller was in bed with the vice president's office.
<Katey> If anything, the right should be cheering her on
<bmc> do not trust anything you see, read or hear
<praxis9> Oh. And if she wasn't sitting in jail for freedom of the press, well, she was sitting in jail because of the machinations of the Evil Doctor Rove.
<bmc> er, something
<praxis9> But, as usual, it was all hot air. So now a bit of revision is in order.
<Katey> praxis9, Are you familiar with Miller's work?
<TimothyW> Maureen Dowd is a beautiful woman that looks like Arianna Huffington alittle. Judith Miller looks like a Miller.
<Estuary> Lipine - and she "can't remember" where she got Plame's name. haha you just can't make this **** up!
<bmc> there is an actual quote to that effect, but i forgot wtf it is
<praxis9> Now Miller's a traitor to the cause and a liar.
<Katey> what cause?
<praxis9> And Ms. Dowdy has been sent out to bring the news.
<bmc> world domination!
<Estuary> "traitor to the cause" ??
<Katey> Miller wrote articles backing administration foreign policy
<Katey> She was their girl
