<WillySilly> i compiled it myself
<tsp> did you makepkg it/
<celti> It dislikes gcc4 for me as well.
<andrewski> tsp: why not use the package?
<tsp> andrewski: too many deps
<andrewski> tsp: ah
<tsp> I have no need for the xorg crap
<tsp> I only use xorg for qemu - and thats going away soon
<WillySilly> tsp: i did
<tsp> does arch use gnome 2.12?
<WillySilly> tsp: yes
<tsp> cool - might try to get gnopernicus in aur
<tsp> wait 2 or 3 years - pkgbuilds will become more complex and turn into the now current ebuilds
<tsp> but that doesn't discourage me from using arch
<bitbull> tsp: hmm?
<c14n> bbl
<bitbull> tsp: you do realize that mplayer not building with gcc4 is mplayer's mistake, right?
<bitbull> cvs works fine though
<iphy> tsp: lol, there's no way pkgbuilds are going to end up as ebuilds, unless the standard ./configure make make install process is made a thousand times more complex.
<bitbull> and has gtk2 support :)
<andrewski> bitbull: ooh, really. well, that's like, what, 3 years after i started using linux? O_o
<bitbull> andrewski: huh?
<tsp> iphy: do you think ebuilds are alot more complex?
<iphy> every one i have seen has been ridiculously more so than the arch equivalent
<andrewski> bitbull: i think mplayer's one of the last desktop apps not yet on gtk 2. that leaves xmms 1.x.
<bitbull> andrewski: mplayer does have gtk2 support in cvs
<andrewski> bitbull: right. summary of what i'm saying: "finally."
<bitbull> ok :)
<WillySilly> hmm
<bitbull> andrewski: I just couldn't see the relation with that and when you started using linux, so I thought I read it wrong :)
<WillySilly> theres nothing to do
<bitbull> WillySilly: port Hurd ti arch
<bitbull> to*
<tsp> ok - I have a tough decision to ake
<tsp> make
<WillySilly> bitbull: waste of time :P
<andrewski> bitbull: i remember that being a hot topic when i did. and it's just now happening. and we're still not even seeing 1.0 stable. :-P
<bitbull> archhurd sounds kinda weird
<tsp> 1. I want to keep using Linux, but increasingly all the apps that I can access are coming out in Windows versions
<andrewski> bitbull: that said, mplayer does play videos the best i've seen of any media player.
<andrewski> tsp: is that the only reason you use linux?
<tsp> and the truth of the matter is - browsing with IE is going to be more efficient than edbrowse for some sites.
<tsp> I use linux for web browsing and email
<tsp> and playing music
<tsp> all with console apps
<bitbull> andrewski: very little has happened in mplayer since d'arpi (or whatever he was named) stopped development
<andrewski> bitbull: hmm
<tsp> typing win+r http://www.google.ca enter waiting a sec, then enter for browse mode, typing a search string enter
<tsp> is faster tahn
<tsp> ee www.google.ca, wait, /<, i1=search string enter enter i1*
<bitbull> but it's still on my workstation for back-up purposes (in the sense that when totem doesn't show something, mplayer will)
<tsp> but at the same time
<tsp> <f is faster than application key, r, moving downt hne table
<tsp> to get the url
<andrewski> bitbull: yes, exactly. which is almost always.
<tsp> if I really did switch to windows I'd make a whole lot of shortcut keys
<bitbull> tsp: who are you talking to?
<tsp> anyone who will listen
<bitbull> and what is your point?
<At0mic_PC> Windows has some shortcut keys.
<andrewski> lol
<bitbull> andrewski: yeah
<bitbull> andrewski: gstreamer isn't worth much yet, but it has great potential IMO :)
<andrewski> bitbull: i would agree there too. especially since gstreamer can be used outside of totem, which is UI nightmare in my opinion.
<bitbull> andrewski: that's what I mean, we do need a general multimedia api with modular backends
<tsp> windows has shortcuts, but there's nothing like mutt
<andrewski> bitbull: yup, so someone can come along and something usable! :-P
<bitbull> andrewski: when the backends get good enough it's going to rock
<tsp> andrewski: you know if there's an activesync for the console?
<bitbull> tsp: you mean like Active Desktop for windows? :D
<tsp> no, active sync
<tsp> for synchronizing PDA's
<bitbull> tsp: sissy
<bitbull> tsp: aren't those available through block devices?
<tsp> the thing's not usb
<tsp> ouch - I typed sissy into google expecting it would bring up the program but it didn't
<tsp> oh weoll, have to refine
<bitbull> that's not a requirement for making the driver use a block device interface
<tsp> oh
<tsp> ah
<tsp> there isn't a driver for it
<bitbull> then how on earth do you want to communicate with it?
<tsp> i'm not usre.
<tsp> sure.
<tsp> that's why it'd be probably better for me to have windows there when I need it
<tsp> since most blindness devices need it :)
<WillySilly> hi syamajala
<bitbull> tsp: are you blind?
<syamajala> w00t
<syamajala> he isn't blind he just can't read
<bitbull> tsp: how's your view on accessibility on linux?
<bitbull> syamajala: there are special designed devices for blind people
<tsp> bitbull: I'm blind
<tsp> bitbull: I think that accessibility on Linux is proceeding rapidly
<bitbull> tsp: how is it compared to windows?
<tsp> Gnome now has a screen reader called Gnopernicus
<tsp> bitbull: not sure - jjaws for windows can read menus and stuff - but only with programs that adhere to guidelines - which is probably most of them
<bitbull> tsp: it's just that I see a lot of work on accessibility and sometimes doubt its usefulness, so it's nice to hear from someone who's actually using it
<tsp> right now, I'm moving around my screen wtih speakup and an external speech synthesizer
<bitbull> tsp: there are such projects for linux too
<bitbull> I think it's called festival
<tsp> yeah
<tsp> I'm using linux/irssi atm
<tsp> oh yeah I couldn't stand ircing with windows
<tsp> tirc is crap
<bitbull> :)
<tsp> only thing is - I don't want to write all my own damn tools under linux
<tsp> I'm in school and don't have weeks to sit there writing a podcast client when perfectly good ones are out there for X if I could only access them
<tsp> the console ones don't give you a way to browse the feeds and picka nd chose downloads
<bitbull> tsp: what do you mean? do you need a PKGBUILD?
<tdoor> n8 all
<syamajala> package is ifconfig apart of?
<tsp> bitbull: I'm going to create a pkgbuild for gnopernicus to see just how ugly it is
<bitbull> $ pacman -Qo /sbin/ifconfig
<bitbull> /sbin/ifconfig is owned by net-tools 1.60-10
<tsp> I really like linux, but I don't think it's working for me as a desktop, especially in just console mode
<syamajala> ok
<syamajala> i forgot to install net-tools and udev
<bitbull> tsp: I think it's already in [extra]
<WillySilly> yeah
<bitbull> yep
<WillySilly> its in extra
<bitbull> extra/gnopernicus 0.11.7-1
<tsp> yes I can read my mail using mutt, browse the web with edbrowse, edit with edbrowse or vim, but edbrowse can't access my online bank
<tsp> cool
<tsp> 0.11.7? wow, gentoo's at 0.10
<tsp> .9 or something
<tsp> I'm thinking of doing this - using windows as my desktop, and linux to store my emails so when I have withdrawl I can read my mail using mutt
<tsp> but I doubt I can do it :)
<syamajala> shouldn't ping be apart of net-tools too
<tsp> will pacman -R gnome get rid of it just as fast as it was installed?
<tsp> how od I get rid of it and its config files if I dont' like it?
<At0mic_PC> Thanks bitbull now my alias is not any good.
<At0mic_PC> alias pacfind='pacman -Ql | grep'
<At0mic_PC> I guess I could change it to "alias pacfind='pacman -Qo'"
<c14n> hmmm
<c14n> that was odd
<tsp> back
<c14n> makin me yawn too
<c14n> wth
<syamajala> c14n ganja_guru said he is having problems
<syamajala> can't write to current
<c14n> syamajala: what are the problems?
<syamajala> or extra
<c14n> he's in that group
<c14n> odd
<Theoden> Do all the Hauppauge WinTv cards work well in linux?
<tsp> here goes gnome
