<doc|home> any and all of them? :) <doc|home> the number of **** websites is inversely proportional to the number which contains blogs <JDigital> You mean proportional to <doc|home> I do indeed, my bad <Ahcoeur> yeah <Ahcoeur> who make a counter with me <Ahcoeur> i want to be counter terrorist <schnoodles> hello does anyone know why on i.e. http://schnoodles.dyndns.org/Diverse-Hosting/V2/ the blinks (bottom footer) doesnt clear both of my float containers ? but it looks perfect on firefox ? <doc|home> Ahcoeur: that was bad. very... very... bad :) <Ahcoeur> ^^ <Ahcoeur> i know :=) <doc|home> `css color <RTFS> css color: http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/colors.html#propdef-color <JDigital> What's the best way to set font size nowadays <doc|home> bah, why couldn't they have a "transparent" option for colour, then the element could stay in place and a background be visible but not the main text :( <doc|home> JDigital: em <JDigital> Entirely in em? <doc|home> yup <JDigital> Why em and not percent <JDigital> and what of browsers where the default size is larger or smaller <doc|home> the default browser size has been settled on at 16px <doc|home> or atleast it was supposed to be <JDigital> IE still shows the wrong size <JDigital> IE's default is smaller. <JDigital> so for a font to be the same size in IE as in Firefox/Opera, it must be set in pts or px or some absolute <doc|home> if you expect everything to be in the exact spot you want it, you need to get a job in graphic design :) <schnoodles> doc|home, do you have any idea why ie. would be doing that to my site ? <JDigital> I just want it to look neat. <JDigital> Sometimes, what looks neat in Opera or Firefox is awful in IE. <Madpilot> JDigital: this is the 1st rule of modern web design: "IE ****s" <doc|home> schnoodles: sorry, don't have IE on this machine :/ <JDigital> But the second rule is, "...and we have to support it anyway." <JDigital> That's also annoying, I don't have IE on this machine to test pages <JDigital> of course the advantage is that I don't have to have Windows :) <doc|home> hehehe <Madpilot> JDigital: likewise... I haven't gotten around to installing WINE & IE yet <schnoodles> oh ok thats ok <schnoodles> from the code could you see anything wrong <schnoodles> like i have 2 floats <schnoodles> the in one float i have more floats <schnoodles> so i have a clear: both in the float with many floats <doc|home> `float clear <RTFS> float clear: www.positioniseverything.net/easyclearing.html , www.quirksmode.org/css/clearing.html , www.complexspiral.com/publications/containing-floats/ <schnoodles> and a clear: both outside of both the floats <doc|home> </random guess> <schnoodles> and i dont think IE likes it :\ <doc|home> what's happening? <Pos3idon> hello <Pos3idon> I can't seem to validate my css could someone help please - the site is www.mcville.net <doc|home> Pos3idon: your question is already being answered in #web <Pos3idon> yeah but that is xhtml <Pos3idon> this is css right? <doc|home> !css http://www.mcville.net <doc|home> no problem there <Pos3idon> hm i'm getting a erron <Pos3idon> *error <doc|home> !css http://www.mcville.net <doc|home> not on the css you're not :) <Madpilot> !html http://www.mcville.net <doc|home> well that's a whole different thing, which he is getting answered in #web <Madpilot> just curious... <schnoodles> doc|home, want me to show you s/s of what it looks like ? <doc|home> if you like <JDigital> I wonder what I should do with my website. <Dalkus> JDigital, I can see? I don't believe I've seen it before <JDigital> It's too ugly for me to just leave it as it is <JDigital> http://www.jonnydigital.com <JDigital> you may need to up the font size to make it readable, hehe <JDigital> state of the art 2001 design here <Dalkus> hehe :) <JDigital> !validate http://www.jonnydigital.com <schnoodles> ok top one is firefox bottom one is IE <schnoodles> http://schnoodles.dyndns.org/Diverse-Hosting/V2/error.PNG <Dalkus> font's good. You could always do the "go look at a hundred pretty websites" inspiration thing. That really helps me cook up a design <schnoodles> firefox is the way i need it to be <Madpilot> wow... I do believe that's the least-valid HTML anyone's every dared show in here! <JDigital> FlamingFoo found a huge page with a thousand <Madpilot> I missed that one, I guess <JDigital> I look at CSS Zen Garden for inspiration, but all it does is make me sad that my websites are never that pretty. <schnoodles> doc|home, see the HUGE problem :P <doc|home> schnoodles: validated? <schnoodles> !validate http://schnoodles.dyndns.org/Diverse-Hosting/V2/ <schnoodles> pretty sure its both valid <doc|home> hmmm <doc|home> I've no idea :/ <schnoodles> yeah ive never seen anything like that <Dalkus> JDigital, well, have you considerd drawing out your website how you wish it could be, then working out how to achieve that? (Like, on paper, and then in an imaging software package?) <Madpilot> need sleep... later, all <Dalkus> It's much easier to create more beautiful designs that way <schnoodles> only thing i can think of is that I.E. cant handle both of the clear:both; 's ? <JDigital> I'm not even sure what I want on my website. It started pre-1999 just as my own personal website for adding random things to and ranting about stuff, and I never really thought of where I was going with it or why. <Dalkus> Easy way out would be to make a tutorial site? Teaches you alot, teachers others alot, and gives you something to design to <JDigital> Good thinking. <JDigital> I really liked Joe Barta's PageTutor, but it's somewhat out of date now. <Dalkus> So make the new, updated JDigital's PageTutor :d <schnoodles> yay fixed the error :) <Dalkus> congrats, schnoodles <schnoodles> another of those stupid height: 1%; fixes :\ <schnoodles> although its like height: 1%; line-height: 26px; :\ <JDigital> I wonder what to do with all of these legacy pages, though. <Dalkus> well, you can have them as a personal section or something? <JDigital> I s'pose. <Dalkus> or hell, have two websites <Dalkus> I plan on having three of four on differnt subjects <Dalkus> and a main website linking them together <JDigital> I've thought of having another website, but I prefer having just one because it has a nice google pagerank. <JDigital> and I already own three web domains <Dalkus> Fair enough <JDigital> It's just the logistics of organising all the old content and whatever new content, and how and what should be on the front page of the site, that's giving me a headache. <JDigital> Well, not a headache. <Dalkus> You could make a simple CMS in perl? (I do that, didn't take long to learn how - and now I have an extra skill) <Dalkus> And extra confidence, of course <Dalkus> (It's not as scary as it sounds :)) <JDigital> I've been making simple CMSs in PHP all year :) <Dalkus> lol oh sorry <Dalkus> code up a nice CMS then, it's geeky and solves that problem <JDigital> I'm just baffled as to where to put everything. <JDigital> No point in managing the content if I don't know where to manage it to <Dalkus> What about starting from scratch, and just reusing the text? Draw out a structured plan on paper as to what goes where <JDigital> That's my general plan so far. <Dalkus> Keep me posted if you start to work on it? :) <JDigital> I wonder what the design should b.e <JDigital> be. <Dalkus> That's the hardest part for me. I just get paper out and draw, then see what happens. I keep doing that, changing this and that <Dalkus> and I tend to end up content <Dalkus> then I draw it up in inkscape, slice it up into strips and chuck up the css/xhtml <Dalkus> thats how I made http://ah.homelinux.org which I like immensly <Dalkus> I'd never have been able to be so free in what I choose otherwise <JDigital> Niiice. <Dalkus> It's just the technique, before that I found it really hard to create a design that I liked <Dalkus> I tend to have to use nested divs too often, though <DjViper> Dalkus: nice, no tablelayout <JDigital> Nested divs are often a requirement for layout, I find <Dalkus> DjViper, of course ;D <JDigital> I'm often impressed when I go to a site and get a FOUC and it's not tabled <Dalkus> JDigital, that's the way I see it, and AFIK it dosn't create accesibility issues? <JDigital> It doesn't? <Dalkus> I hope not - I've not read it anywhere, but I've been encouraged not to use nested divs in the past <Dalkus> I'm not sure as to why <JDigital> It simplifies things to do so. I tend to have, for example, a wrapper div that goes around the entire page, then I do a margin: 0 auto; on that <JDigital> then inside that I have maybe my two columns as float <JDigital> s
