<frb-work> also, konq uses kwrite for view source, how do I change that to kate? <sredna> frb-work: Move kate above kwrite in the file ***ociations for text/html I think <frb-work> I really wish kwrite never ran at all :) <frb-work> kwrite/kate arent in the list for that <sredna> frb-work: Then look at text/plain, or add kate for text/html <sredna> frb-work: And if you want to use an existing instance of kate, you should make the command 'kate --use' <frb-work> thanks, changing the order on text/plain <sredna> That is, in kde 3.5 <frb-work> I have b2 <frb-work> I like the searchable menu, I wish that was in the open with... dialog as well <frb-work> I _really_ like the searchable menu <frb-work> like a run dialog, only better <sredna> What searchable menu? <frb-work> the kmenu on suse kde <sredna> Hm, my K menu looks all normal <pinucset> how can i edit wich applications auto-open when i start kde? <sredna> pinucset: Look at the autostart directory <sredna> There is a global one, and a local one <sredna> ~ug <pinucset> isnt it at kcontrol? <apt> hmm... ug is http://docs.kde.org/development/en/kdebase/userguide/ <sredna> pinucset: That is TODO <pinucset> thanks apt and sredna :D <sredna> Hm, I think the userguide is still a section on the autostart directory short <linuxgeek2067> hey everyone <linuxgeek2067> Familiar with dual displays? <linuxgeek2067> If I have a game running in display 0.0 is there a hot-key to switch to 0.1? <SpudULike> Help with knotes please. Where can I find the text portion of notes made with knotes. I had ***umed it would be under .kde/share/apps/knotes/notes but I can only see what appears to be config files. <antgel> hi all. have a kubuntu box installed for my parents. not happy with stability and bugs but then i'm spoilt with my box which is debian / windowmaker. given that they couldn't give a toss about newness, will they have a better experience with debian stable kde as opposed to kubuntu kde? <antgel> put another way, is it likely that flakiness is more an ubuntu trait or a kde trait? <sredna> SpudULike: What KDE version? <sredna> antgel: The newer the KDE version, the more friendly to non-geeks. Period. <frb-work> which app has a tasklist and manager? <SpudULike> Ah, err, I think the notes would have been saved while using a Kubuntu 5.04. <antgel> sredna: hmm. what if i argued that bugs and instability are unfriendly? e.g. /media is broken in kubuntu <linuxgeek2067> switching displays via a hot-key if playing a game in display 0.0 <linuxgeek2067> is that possible in KDE? <madpenguin8> ?? <madpenguin8> ctrl-alt-f7 f8 does this <linuxgeek2067> if i have dual displays <madpenguin8> oh, switch screens <linuxgeek2067> Right <madpenguin8> not that I know of <linuxgeek2067> switch displays <linuxgeek2067> K thanks <madpenguin8> display is both screens imho <madpenguin8> screen is one monitor <linuxgeek2067> Seesm to me that dual displays is useless then if one is playing a game <madpenguin8> why? <sredna> antgel: I'd still say that the newer kde is better. Media:/ not working is of course not good, but then kubuntu should fix that! <linuxgeek2067> well I have display 0.0 and display 0.1 <linuxgeek2067> i.e. echo $DIDSPLAY <linuxgeek2067> i.e. echo $DISPLAY <antgel> sredna: yes they should. have you actually *used* kde in debian stable and kubuntu? <linuxgeek2067> because there is no way to switch displays <linuxgeek2067> Got to be a way to do this <madpenguin8> what are you trying to switch, move an app from one to the other? <sredna> antgel: No, I never really used any debian based distro <linuxgeek2067> No i am playing a full screen game in display 0.0 <linuxgeek2067> I want to switch to 0.1 <linuxgeek2067> to surf the web <antgel> sredna: right. thanks anyway. <linuxgeek2067> or surf the forums <antgel> and the word forum :) <linuxgeek2067> he he.. linugeek Loves it <madpenguin8> if you are fullscreen how can switch? <linuxgeek2067> i cannot that is my issue <antgel> linuxgeek2067: you can't be much of a geek, more a hobbyist dabbler :) <madpenguin8> you want a game on both displays? <linuxgeek2067> Why I am asking is there a way to do this <linuxgeek2067> No <madpenguin8> your question doesn't make sense then <linuxgeek2067> I want to startup say web browser <madpenguin8> ok <linuxgeek2067> an search forums <linuxgeek2067> for say my game character <linuxgeek2067> and things that i do with it <madpenguin8> ok <linuxgeek2067> Or there is whole document on setting up macros for my game <linuxgeek2067> stuff like that <madpenguin8> ok, you want to switch between 2 xservers? <linuxgeek2067> right <linuxgeek2067> display 0.0 and 0.1 <madpenguin8> ctrl-alt-f7 <madpenguin8> ctral-alt-f8 <madpenguin8> ctrl <linuxgeek2067> ok will give that a try.. thanks <linuxgeek2067> hmm <linuxgeek2067> I think I only have one x server.. but 2 displays <linuxgeek2067> each has its own desktop <madpenguin8> ahh, ok, non xinerama <linuxgeek2067> well its Nvidia <linuxgeek2067> and i believe it does some automagic Xinerama <madpenguin8> twin view <linuxgeek2067> yea <madpenguin8> then your desktop is spread across both <linuxgeek2067> well it has two seperate desktops <madpenguin8> then not twinview <linuxgeek2067> ie. 2 sets of taskbars <linuxgeek2067> different icons on the desktop <linuxgeek2067> so it must be Xinerama <madpenguin8> I think twinview is only for one desktop <linuxgeek2067> ah ok <madpenguin8> which is the better way imho <madpenguin8> works good here <linuxgeek2067> not for games tho <madpenguin8> why? <linuxgeek2067> it is stretched across two screens then <linuxgeek2067> I want it only in one display <madpenguin8> set them to the resolution of one monitor <linuxgeek2067> I tried that <madpenguin8> what happens <linuxgeek2067> set what the game <linuxgeek2067> When I first built this I tried twinview <madpenguin8> I use tux racer and such with no problems <linuxgeek2067> but I couldn't get past the game going across both monitors <linuxgeek2067> well I tried Savage, cedega games <linuxgeek2067> ut2004 <linuxgeek2067> doom3 <madpenguin8> what is the resolution of your monitors? <linuxgeek2067> well **cough** don't laugh... **cough** one is 1600x1200 19" and the other is 17" 1024x768 <madpenguin8> so force it to use one of those resolutions <linuxgeek2067> the other is one I want to use for web browsing while playing games <linuxgeek2067> Hmm but then I don't get any taskbars or seperate desktops <linuxgeek2067> so essentially the game is running in a window then <linuxgeek2067> t <SpudULike> I'm still looking for the text portion of some knotes. Am I right in thinking this does appear as text or is it hidden away encrypted somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what version of KDE was used but it would have been part of either Suse 9.2 or Kubuntu 5.04. <canllaith> SpudULike: they are in ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes.ics <willie> hi - just <SpudULike> canllaith: Thanks for that, I see it's 'hidden' with a load of formatting info. I was struggling to see the file by simple point and click methods, doing a right click on the file would give me the chance to fire up Kate, but the editor was just showing an empty file. Any idea why that would have happened? <canllaith> I really don't know I'm afraid. If you look for where KDE hides information though best to use a terminal I find :) <willie> hi just loaded 3.5 beta and I need to roll back -- the soundserver is crashing constantly -not in itself a total disaster but I cant get anything done because of the crash windows that keep popping up <willie> Im using kubuntu Breezy on a Athlon 200XP with 1024 MB <willie> KDE started with a artsd crash message. This happemns occaisionally and I thought nothing of it. I have on board Via AC97 sound btw. <willie> used it successfully for a few mins and chatted on iRC , poked about a bit. Went into System settings to try to restart sound. After I looked in there I kept getting lots of artsd has crashed typewindows <stupendo44> annma: thanks, I got it <stupendo44> why does konqueror display the complete filenames, but the desktop doesn't. Is there a setting I can change somewhere? <willie> canllaith: restarted alsa and KDE - artsd no longer crashes - xmms works just fine BUT in SyStem Settings|sound I get a dialog saying 'unable to start sound system to retrieve possible sound i/o metods. only auto detection available <willie> If I persist and try to adjust settings the sound server progress bar just ciontinously loops tpo 100% and back <canllaith> willie: What do you mean 'system settings | sound' ? <canllaith> Is this a KDE dialog? <willie> however I can listen to sounds and explore the rest of this shiny beta <willie> yep from the 'K' menu <willie> sorry System Sttings |Sound & Multimedia <annma> willie: new install of kde? <willie> apt-get update from 3.4.3 <annma> same user? <willie> yep <annma> try a new user
