<dtm> i wanna be like J4k3 when i grow up
<Pablo> J4k3 is my hero also
<WaV> bleh, the dhcp server and web admin webpage keep dying, and I would have to reflash my wrt every two days if I wanted to make use of them
<WaV> i dont know why..
<hjohnson> hmm.. suposedly, the security engineering group of the RCMP is looking for people
<SteveWrightNZ> bah, any grub people around ?
<dtm> SteveWrightNZ: perhaps!
<dtm> i have done basic recovery
<keter> ooooooh that kind of grub people
<keter> i thought you meant people who bum stuff
<dtm> :-.
<SteveWrightNZ> I forgot to set my first HDD bootable in the BIOS before install, and the (very long) "install everything" failed at the last step.. The system is on the HDD ok, but grub is not installed (/boot/grub has only splash.xpm.gz).. is there an easy way to recover this (rescue mode is booted and `chroot /mnt/sysimage`) or am I stuck with a re-install ?
<jnorell> oh, should be able to recover that no problem
<GotD0t> just boot into a livecd and repair it that way
<SteveWrightNZ> yes GotD0t, rescue mode *is* a live CD
<SteveWrightNZ> re-read ^^
<GotD0t> i gotcha
<GotD0t> so whats the problem?
<GotD0t> or hell... make a grub floppy, boot into the system normally, and then install grub, don't have to worry about chrooting
<dtm> SteveWrightNZ: you can google for boot.img and boot that floppy and the page you find it on will have the instructions
<SteveWrightNZ> ok, `grub-install /dev/sda` did actually install the first stage
<dtm> i think
<dtm> or is it not boot.img
<SteveWrightNZ> k
<SteveWrightNZ> I did `grub-install /dev/sda` which put grub on the MBR
<SteveWrightNZ> and now it boots to grub>
<Aguila1> hello
<Aguila1> i have one question
<Aguila1> iam speck spanish
<Aguila1> can you help me?
<myself`248> we can try, just ask it!
<Aguila1> i have a parabolic grid antenna. 23 dbi
<Aguila1> this have a wire with n conectors in the tail
<Aguila1> i think that tehe antenna is wrong (bad, crash)
<Aguila1> iam tester with continus electric tester touch de central pin and the external mesh
<Aguila1> the question is... external mesh and central pin is togheter?
<Aguila1> is contact
<jdhutchin1> no
<jdhutchin1> the bit metal dish part is not connected to the coax in any way
<jdhutchin1> that part is just a reflector
<jdhutchin1> there's a small driven element in the focus of the dish, that's where the coax goes to
<Aguila1> inside the focus? is not connected?
<jdhutchin1> correct
<Aguila1> but i construct one antenna this --> <>o<>
<jdhutchin1> not sure what your diagram is of
<Aguila1> coax is connected to bit metal
<jdhutchin1> but the way a parabolic dish works, there's a small driven element at the focus of the dish
<jdhutchin1> and then a reflector dish that is not connected to anything electrically
<Aguila1> ok
<Aguila1> do you help me or you can think where is yhis union?
<Aguila1> you have msn?
<Aguila1> but i have cam!
<Aguila1> jdhutchin1 is over there?
<jdhutchin1> yeah
<jdhutchin1> I don't have msn
<jdhutchin1> I'm not really sure what you're asking
<Aguila1> ok, i can graphic the antenna
<Aguila1> <=====)--------o
<Aguila1> < = focus
<jdhutchin1> yeah
<jdhutchin1> the ) is not connected to the coax
<Aguila1> ) = parabolic
<Aguila1> ---------- = wire coax
<Aguila1> o = N connector
<Aguila1> yes? next step?
<jdhutchin1> yes
<Aguila1> when in the N connector test electric conductive betwen bit metal center (PIN) and extermal metal (mash of conectors) the tester tool mark continus
<Aguila1> yes? you understan me?
<myself`248> The last dish I saw, the reflector was grounded. That's fine.
<jdhutchin1> yeah, I guess it can be
<myself`248> The driven element was inside a plastic piece, not outside.
<jdhutchin1> it doesn't have to be
<SteveWrightNZ> irrelevant
<jdhutchin1> and the mesh *should* be connected to the center wire (the pin)
<jdhutchin1> *should not
<SteveWrightNZ> lol
<Aguila1> how can test?
<SteveWrightNZ> plug it in, turn it on 8-)
<Aguila1> any have msn? i have cam to explain
<Aguila1> any one?
<jnorell> post your picture to a website somewhere
<Aguila1> ok
<Aguila1> http://201.255.130.103/wifi/
<Aguila1> picture
<Aguila1> 1.jpg; 2.jpg; 3.jpg; 4.jpg
<Aguila1> in 3.jpg the black tester wire is on back my hand
<Aguila1> any can view some picture?
<High_Priest> lol
<Aguila1> ok, if any can help thank a lot
<Aguila1> my english is bad, sorry iam speck spanish
<myself248> okay, I saw the pictures. What are you trying to show?
<Aguila1> ok, in picture 3. When test conductivity betwen mesh and center pin, the tester indicate conductive
<myself248> oooooh! I just read your question again. You're saying there's a short circuit from the pin to the outer conductor?
<Aguila1> is ok that?
<myself248> Some antennas are designed that way, but it might be bad.
<myself248> Look up "quarter-wave stub" surge supressors.
<myself248> And look at how the Biquad antenna is designed. At DC, it's a wire. At 2.4GHz, it's an antenna.
<jmardones> hi, i have a little question, how i can calculate the posicion of the access points, where i can put them
<Aguila1> yes, i am construction a <>o<> --> antenna and the short circuit is well
<myself248> It looks like your antenna is a small enclosed yagi?
<Aguila1> no, is a plastic piece of the grid parabolic antenna
<Aguila1> 23 dbi
<Aguila1> is outside
<myself248> hmm. Does it work?
<myself248> There's no way to tell, with a DC meter, whether it works at RF.
<Aguila1> yes two days later
<myself248> then don't worry about it!
<Aguila1> but... de signad to other access point is -95 rssi.... and two days ago -76 rssi
<Aguila1> and when probe to conect other output router antenna no change
<myself248> The signal from 23dBi is a very narrow beam. Are you sure it didn't get knocked out of alignment?
<myself248> is the other antenna the same type?
<Aguila1> no... teh other antena is de original of linksys wrt54g routers
<Aguila1> is 600 meters to this
<myself248> Can you call the manufacturer and ask? Is it normal for this antenna to show a short-circuit?
<Aguila1> yes i think than
<Aguila1> but iam but this antenna fear of my city
<Aguila1> where are you fromn?
<myself248> Michigan, in the US
<Aguila1> but iam BUY this antenna fear of my city
<Aguila1> aaa EEUU
<Aguila1> the next week bush is came to argentina
<myself248> I don't understand "fear of my city", you mean it's not allowed?
<bucky> the police are cracking down on any suspicious activity
<Aguila1> iam buy this antenna in Buenos Aires city and iam here, Tandil city 400 kilometers of buenos aires
<myself248> they actually have time to go after a few kids with wifi gear?
<bucky> haha
<myself248> oooh, far from your city. :) I get it now.
<bucky> Aguila1, what.. your making a 400 km shot?
<myself248> No, he had to drive 400km to get the antenna.
<myself248> (I think.)
<Aguila1> yessss
<myself248> Do you know anyone who uses the same antenna, and could measure theirs for you to compare to?
<Aguila1> 400 km to pickup the antenna
<bucky> he wants to be sure he has all the parts he needs before he goes home
<Aguila1> no, here the wifi tecnology is new :(.... when in usa wimax is the present
<bucky> Aguila1, do you use Utoto ?
<myself248> no, wimax is still vaporware.
<Aguila1> Utoto?
<myself248> I can't buy wimax. I can't even go see any wimax working.
<bucky> it's a linux distro from Argentina
<myself248> vapor meaning "does not exist"
<Aguila1> Linux rock?
<Aguila1> linux rock is development in my university
<Aguila1> www.unicen.edu.ar
<bucky> excuse me Ututo
<Rawplayer> good for you lol
<Rawplayer> !mac
<WifiFred> specify: [-a] <mac address>
<Aguila1> i from TANDIL. Tandil is near of Mar del Plata. Mar del plata is the city where bush is going next week
