<silentfury> f5d
<J4k3--> furrywolf: or its the 'cheapest thing they could find that day' ;)
<J4k3--> (dlink style)
<furrywolf> silentfury: yes. this was googling for it with f5d. fsd didn't find anything.
<furrywolf> heh
<J4k3--> I find it funny I can sit here and hold a conversation with a -94 dbm signal
<silentfury> then again it's belkin
<silentfury> which is a synonym for crap
<J4k3--> atheros 4 life
<furrywolf> the seller has his address as just a few minutes drive from here, so I could save on shipping...
<furrywolf> how about a netgear MA401? :P
<furrywolf> which, rather than finding too many chipsets, isn't finding any chipsets.
<J4k3-> furry, try this
<J4k3-> http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz
<furrywolf> says it's prism 2/2.5/3. which means what in terms of using it? heh
<dragorn> it means use wlan-ng or hostap
<furrywolf> does it mean I'm going to have to do a new kernel compile and/or other major compile on my pentium/120? :)
<dragorn> means you're going to have to build a module
<dragorn> which are out-of-tree drivers at the moment anyhow
<dragorn> so if you have your kernel source and you've got pcmcia or whatever turned on
<dragorn> then you don't have to touch your kernel.
<dragorn> oh. .13. ugh.
<dragorn> good luck
<furrywolf> something wrong with 2.6.13.1?
<dragorn> yup
<dragorn> they once again redid all the APIs
<dragorn> plus wodged a broke*** orinoco prerelease driver into it
<dragorn> so everything has to be rewritten again just for .13
<dragorn> I don't know if wlan-ng or hostap have been
<furrywolf> would that explain why my orinoco card doesn't bloody work? :P
<dragorn> could do
<dragorn> I think the orinoco 0.15 drivers are a piece of crap, I've yet to get one to run acceptably in rfmon for more than 2-3 minutes, and they all work fine with 0.13
<furrywolf> I don't think it's a software problem though... I'm starting to think the card is bad. why looking for a new card.
<dragorn> 2.6.13 also redid the entire pcmcia subsystem
<dragorn> so pcmcia-cs is no longer used
<dragorn> and a mess of other major changes
<furrywolf> I got it to work ONCE. an hour and 10 minutes of perfect 11mbit wireless. but I didn't do anything differently that time, and it worked neither before nor with anything I've done after.
<furrywolf> heh, it took way too many hours to compile that kernel...
<furrywolf> I haven't had any other problems with 2.6.13.1... all my other pcmcia cards work, for example, and it's a LOT faster than the 2.4 kernel I had before.
<furrywolf> 0.2.1-final
<furrywolf> - Added in-kernel devicetable for 2.6.13+ pcmcia
<furrywolf> looks like wlan-ng at least mentions 2.6.13 kernels
<furrywolf> why isn't all this stuff bloody built into the kernel and simply works? :P
<dragorn> Because theres still no single kernel 802.11 framework
<dragorn> it's being worked on.
<furrywolf> and linux-wlan-ng still pisses me off, as it's still the worst written documentation and least-useful faq I've ever read.
<furrywolf> I've seen microsoft manuals that are more accurate, and that's sad. :P
<furrywolf> i.e. it tells you what to do with firmware, but nowhere does it tell you where to bloody GET the firmware...
<dragorn> if you mean the tertiary ap firmware, it's license only
<J4k3-> thats a serious problem
<J4k3-> somebody needs to shake down the wifi chipset vendors, seriously
<dragorn> Not what I'm talking about.
<dragorn> I asked if he was referring to tertiary Ap firmware
<dragorn> which is licensed from the company as part of a developer kit for building APs using that chipset.
<dragorn> Not at all the same as normal firmware
<dragorn> which is still a copyright/license issue on its own
<furrywolf> the README, of course, like every other bit of their documentation, wrong...
<furrywolf> have they even bloody updated the documentation since 2.2 kernels? heh
<dragorn> so don't use wlan-ng.
<furrywolf> then what else? :P
<J4k3-> atheros4life
<furrywolf> how hard would an atheros card be to make work, then?
<furrywolf> and why can't I find atheros as anything other than mini-pci?
<J4k3-> dwl-g650 "108mbit" models are atheros
<J4k3-> the others are broadcrap
<dragorn> hostap.
<dragorn> or get a netgate atheros w/ antenna jacks
<furrywolf> those sound like they cost a lot more than I have to spend. heh.
<J4k3-> well
<J4k3-> I got a g650 for $20ish
<dragorn> http://bensbargains.net/cgi-bin/gp.cgi?USB-UG-200 for anyone who cares, $30 usb gps
<furrywolf> http://cgi.ebay.com/D-Link-DWL-G650-Wireless-Card-802-11G-108Mbps-Dlink_W0QQitemZ5817613060QQcategoryZ45000QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem <== that's the one you claim is good?
<furrywolf> dragorn: $49 != $30?
<J4k3-> says $49 for me ;(
<furrywolf> this should be simple... all I want to do is take my laptop to a friend's/coffee shop/etc and have internet.
<furrywolf> I've spent two bloody weeks trying to get my current card working...
<J4k3-> and yeah, thats the card I'm talking about
<furrywolf> and two months of random trying
<J4k3-> but some people ***** about it
<J4k3-> cardbus/pcmcia seems to fall in the 'crappy hack' department
<J4k3-> :|
<furrywolf> heh
<J4k3-> I will say I had zero problem getting my senao prism2 to work in FreeBSD on a 486DX2/66 laptop
<furrywolf> a ****ing housebrick does more than my current wireless card does.
<J4k3-> haha
<furrywolf> I STILL can't get it to work again.
<furrywolf> it still does the exact same thing... gets the essid of the ap, but gives a signal of 0/92, and getting an ip just times out.
<dragorn> furrywolf: 39. And I don't care. $30 or $40 is still cheap.
<J4k3-> hmm furrywolf
<furrywolf> and iwlist scan always returns "no scan results", even if it's a foot from the ap. any ap.
<J4k3-> what chipset?
<furrywolf> prism 1
<J4k3-> oldschool
<furrywolf> dragorn: for at least me and J4k3, it says $49. :P
<furrywolf> the one time it worked, it got the essid, got a signal of 92/92, and just worked.
<genoobie> evening all
<genoobie> furry!
<furrywolf> but can't make it work again
<furrywolf> heyas
<genoobie> furry do you know anything about antenna rotators/controllers?
<furrywolf> nope
<genoobie> doh!
<genoobie> :)
<furrywolf> I know about vibrators that have rotating bits with digital controllers, does that count? :P
<EfentharWireless> how long it can take just to get a laptop running
<furrywolf> I have no idea why the wireless card worked that one time, as I didn't do anything differently, and why it won't work again no matter what I try.
<furrywolf> it picks up the essid even if it's WAY far from the access point...
<furrywolf> so it's obviously receiving correctly
<furrywolf> but even if I'm a foot from the ap, nothing.
<furrywolf> sometimes it gives a message along the lines of "new link status: connected" instantly followed by "new link status: ap out of range", again even if I'm a foot from an ap.
<J4k3-> hmm
<J4k3-> does the AP have long preamble enabled?
<J4k3-> is it locked to 11mbit or anything?
<furrywolf> dunno. I've tried about 20 APs, including the one it worked on the first time, all of which work for other people.
<furrywolf> and always, as I said, "no scan results", even if everyone else picks up 5 aps within range...
<J4k3-> http://store.yahoo.com/pcbay1/rddre80wicaa.html
<J4k3-> I have one of those
<J4k3-> I'll try to get it working on the 486 tonight
<J4k3-> actually, bzzt on the 486
<J4k3-> its pcmcia not cardbus... thats a cardbus card
<furrywolf> but it grabs the essid of the nearest ap perfectly, even if it's really far from it... it actually gets the essid well before a relative's box finds it on scan results.
<J4k3-> yeah the essid scan is probably p***ive
<furrywolf> "VERSION/PICTURE MAY BE DIFFERENT." gee, that makes me think I'm likely to get the right card. heh.
<furrywolf> heh, my laptop (although a pentium 1) has cardbus.
<furrywolf> spent way, way, way too long on it.
<furrywolf> the ONE time it worked, it worked perfectly. popped the card in, showed a 92/92 signal, ran dhclient, spent the next hour and 10 minutes with a perfect 11mbit connection as I wandered around his house.
<J4k3-> weird
<jdhutchin1> what card is this?
<furrywolf> jdhutchin1: original smc2632w, appears to be prism 1 chipset.
<jdhutchin1> ah
<furrywolf> which everyone claims is a well supported card with working drivers and no problems
<jdhutchin1> what drivers? linux-wlan?
<furrywolf> stock 2.6.13.1 kernel drivers
<jdhutchin1> ok
<furrywolf> linux-wlan-ng seems to claim it's for prism2 and above only.
<jdhutchin1> yeah, that's what I had thought
<furrywolf> and I can't afford to buy a new card, so I'd like to make this one work. heh.
<hjohnson> I didn't know that anyone still had cards prior to prism 2.5
<hjohnson> furrywolf: they can be had for $10 these days, d00d. :)
<hjohnson> heck atheros cards are cheap now. ;)
<hjohnson> my favourite 11b card,t hough, is still the Orinoco
<furrywolf> hjohnson: that would be 10 times more than I paid for my laptop.
<hjohnson> lol
