<dtm> does anyone know the syntax for adjusting power on wrt54g openwrt? 'wl txpwr1 35' doesn't work
<ispiked> dtm: is that a router?
<ispiked> dtm: wouldn't you use iwconfig?
<ispiked> if it's a card, that is.
<dtm> ispiked: it's a wrt54g
<dtm> ispiked: yeah it's originally a router. this one's configured as a client bridge
<ispiked> hrm...
<dtm> 'wl txpwr' is allegedly supposed to work but it doesn't
<ispiked> so you can't just access the firmware page?
<J4k3> dtm: it works great.
<J4k3> dtm: it just won't let you increase the TX power beyond what the radio itself knows it can handle.
<dtm> J4k3: it wont let me lower it, even.
<dtm> J4k3: 'wl txpwr1 35' <-- is that proper syntax?
<dtm> or 'wl -i eth1 txpwr1 35'
<J4k3> hmm, its been a while
<dtm> J4k3: also i wonder if i should lock in any settings, such as transmit rate or whatever
<ryangoldberg> awesomo4002, yes, in the default setup
<awesomo4002> eek. i did a bad thing.
<ryangoldberg> hm?
<awesomo4002> i have v1.1 wrt54gs
<awesomo4002> and i set the lan_ifnames to be vlan2 eth bla
<awesomo4002> then i couldn't get to it at all..
<ryangoldberg> hmm
<awesomo4002> trying to reset
<ryangoldberg> press+hold reset for 15seconds
<awesomo4002> somethings happening ... will it take a long time to boot after a reset ?
<ryangoldberg> shouldn't
<awesomo4002> reset w/power on ?
<ryangoldberg> or, while rebooting, about 5 seconds after it boots, when the dmz light comes on, hit+release the reset button. this should put you in failsafe.
<awesomo4002> ok
<ryangoldberg> and it should have 192.168.1.1, which you should be able to telnet to
<awesomo4002> oh thanks
<awesomo4002> that worked
<ryangoldberg> now:
<awesomo4002> it remembered its name...
<ryangoldberg> nvram set lan_ifnames=vlan0 eth1 eth2 eth3
<awesomo4002> but the startup scripts are not symlinks
<awesomo4002> ok. that's what it is
<ryangoldberg> nvram set lan_ifname=br0
<ryangoldberg> nvram commmit
<ryangoldberg> reboot
<awesomo4002> can't get to it...
<awesomo4002> drat
<awesomo4002> i'm plugged into a non-wan ethernet port
<awesomo4002> going back to safe mode
<awesomo4002> ok in safe mode...
<ryangoldberg> what else have you changed?
<awesomo4002> lan_ipaddr
<ryangoldberg> try the 192.168.1.1
<awesomo4002> lan_gateway
<ryangoldberg> when not in safe mode
<awesomo4002> ok
<ryangoldberg> hay, double check those vars while you're logged in
<awesomo4002> the ones above ?
<awesomo4002> they look ok
<ryangoldberg> set to what you changed them to?
<awesomo4002> they are the values you mentioned above
<ryangoldberg> ah, can you get to 192.168.1.1 after reboot, not in safemode?
<awesomo4002> what should i set the gateway to if there isn't one
<ryangoldberg> set it to 192.168.1.1, should work, or somthing bogus.
<ryangoldberg> 192.168.1.254
<awesomo4002> k
<ryangoldberg> why bother dikcing withthe IP if the thing is just going to bridge anyway?
<awesomo4002> i want to access it from the same net of all my other boxes
<awesomo4002> and make it have a unique ip
<awesomo4002> setting up wds with another wrt54g
<awesomo4002> or... trying to...
<ryangoldberg> ah. leave it unset (gateway that is). that appears to be the default
<ryangoldberg> and just set the ip
<awesomo4002> nvram unset
<awesomo4002> ok i got to it... ssh was back ... in non-safemode
<awesomo4002> ip was 192.168.1.1
<awesomo4002> i got to it from ethernet
<ryangoldberg> holding reset like that reset the nvram stuff
<awesomo4002> ok
<awesomo4002> can you do that without the power plugged in ?
<ryangoldberg> I wouldn't think so.
<awesomo4002> ok
<awesomo4002> now i'll try changing the ip
<awesomo4002> on the lanif
<awesomo4002> can i test this without rebooting ?
<ryangoldberg> hold on-
<ryangoldberg> without nvram commit, you can /etc/init.d/S40network restart, iirc
<awesomo4002> cool
<awesomo4002> thx
<awesomo4002> ok .. back in..
<AboAli> hi All
<AboAli> im new here so excuse me of my Questions maybe seems silly or something,,

<ryangoldberg> good deal
<awesomo4002> now he needs ipkg and regular internet through the gateway... here we go
<AboAli> Need to set a long distance WIFI Internet to cover Are of 7 KM/Sqr
<ryangoldberg> AboAli, how many client, what kind of terrain
<ryangoldberg> what kind of budget, what kind of reliability required?
<AboAli> 100 and more Clients withen this Area,, and terrain is normal buildings are not soo high (7 floors max)
<AboAli> budget is unlimited, reliability should be guaranteed
<ryangoldberg> so urban. what kind of access do you have to e.g. utility poles, buildings, etc?
<AboAli> what do u mean exactlly by "Kind of access" !? I still need to write and Study a Proposal for setting this in my City ,,
<AboAli> ive to finish and Setup this within 2 months max, becasue on 2006 my country will Close all Kinds of Wiring communications between buildings.
<ryangoldberg> I mean, can you put radios on utility poles, on buildings, etc?
<ryangoldberg> may I ask what country?
<ryangoldberg> Is the wireless access for mobile clients, or to connect buildings, or both?
<AboAli> yes you can set all kind of poles in Building, -depending on Bandwidth and Freqs-
<AboAli> Egypt is the country
<ryangoldberg> ok. my company handle thiing like this. we've set up various municipalities, school districts, etc. can I give you my partner's email address?
<AboAli> ys sure plz
<ryangoldberg> jp@fixedwirelessone.com
<AboAli> you've a Branch in there !?
<ryangoldberg> in Egypt?
<AboAli> yes
<ryangoldberg> no
<ryangoldberg> we're based in the US, minnesota and california
<AboAli> is there any Supporting Materials, study or PDS files for all Requirements and Specs !?
<ryangoldberg> exactly what do you mean?
<ryangoldberg> If you can provide us the requirements, we can provide whatever you may need. This may be better carried out over email. Please send JP an email. I am a network engineer and admin, he handles the business end of things.
<AboAli> okay I'll do this tomorrow,, thx for your help
<ryangoldberg> good luck
<awesomo4002> will wds extend the range of my wireless ?
<exempnet> anybody have gentoo working with hostap?
<ryangoldberg> awesomo4002, no
<awesomo4002> is there anything that will
<ryangoldberg> directional antenna, more power, lower receive threshold
<ryangoldberg> lower modulation
<ryangoldberg> exempnet, what do you need to know?
<exempnet> hostap kernel module for the 2.6 kernel
<exempnet> for gentoo
<ryangoldberg> right, I mean what problem are you having?
<awesomo4002> how can i use 2 wrt54g s to make my wifi network extend farther
<awesomo4002> does one need to be a client or repeater or something
<ryangoldberg> you coulld just get a WRE54G
<ryangoldberg> so you simply want more wireless coverage?
<awesomo4002> right... and to plug a wired device into the "other" (client) one
<awesomo4002> xbox downstairs, internet connection upstairs :(
<ryangoldberg> correct, 1 in ap mode, other in cient, or use wds
<awesomo4002> is there an advantage to wds vs. client
<Pablo_C> you can walk around and still stay ***ociated
<awesomo4002> with which one
<Pablo_C> instead of having the change ap's
<Pablo_C> wds
<Pablo_C> wireless distribution system
<Pablo_C> or somthin like that
<awesomo4002> oh.. so in client mode, you don't actually connect to the client ap, it just provides service to the ethernet side ?
<Pablo_C> yes
<ryangoldberg> tah.
<awesomo4002> but wds actually lets you ...
<awesomo4002> use either, and really does extend coverage..
<Pablo_C> it does extend range
<Pablo_C> larger range than one ap
<Pablo_C> cause there are 2
