<J4k3> is there any reason latency would increase if there are no recorded crc errors on either side?
<J4k3> or is this goofy wifi crap thinking it needs to wait for every tom **** and harry that I receive with a -97 signal should be waited on?
<dragorn> J4k3: if it obeys cts/rts it could affect it. A lot of stuff doesn't. Also remember is cmsc-ca, not cd, so it might delay internally
<dragorn> just two thoughts.
<J4k3> yeah, something is goofy about staros in that department... its probably the reason why it logs several million wifi errors per hour.
<J4k3> yet nothing else does.
<J4k3> damn weekends are ****ing weak. The first ups/fedex/dhl style carrier that goes 7-days-normal-delivery will win the market.
<EO_> holy crap that was a lotta driving
<J4k3> exxonmobil thanks you
<J4k3> for your support
<J4k3> ;)
<DrDT> haha, reading over the log is hilarious
<DrDT> [14:42:58] <CmaX> okay, but you need a voip box... i'm talking about phones for people who don't even have electricity, never mind phone lines
<DrDT> [14:43:21] <Sweeper> how will they power their ****ing phone?
<curious> http://www.againsttcpa.com/what-is-tcpa.html
<curious> can anyone confirm this is real ?
<jdhutchin1> yes, tcpa is real
<jdhutchin1> no, no one actually uses it right now
<jdhutchin1> and for the forseeable future either
<dragorn> welcome to the future.
<jdhutchin1> I've been reading stuff about tcpa for years
<dragorn> yeah
<jdhutchin1> and it's still the same distance away that it was when it first started
<dragorn> oh it's not going to happen tomorrow
<dragorn> but some day we're going to get ****ed by it
<jdhutchin1> if things keep going at the present rate, yeah
<dragorn> same as the patent system. It's broke as hell now, but we're too gone to fix it w/out the new one being even worse
<GotD0t> hey jdhutchin1
<jdhutchin1> hey GotD0t
<dragorn> imagine a modern-day lobbyist driven patent initiative
<jdhutchin1> yeah, unfortunately patents these days are "approve it and let the courts sort it out"
<jdhutchin1> like the xml patent
<dragorn> process patents are killing us
<jdhutchin1> they're just feeding the lawyers
<GotD0t> jdhutchin1: thats just a case of a company wanting money and realizing that amazon has money
<dragorn> the xml one is extra funny, since it doesn't apply to xml
<jdhutchin1> yeah
<jdhutchin1> but the general idea
<jdhutchin1> things like that happen every so often
<GotD0t> jdhutchin1: they're just trying to play on the retarded system to get money outta a company thats got money to spare
<jdhutchin1> that's what SCO planned with IBM
<GotD0t> of course
<GotD0t> its another SCO case...
<GotD0t> and it'll be accompanied by as much bull****
<jdhutchin1> yeah- a lot of talk but nothing ever really gets changed by it
<jdhutchin1> except a few lawyers get rich
<GotD0t> lawyers always make it rich... that way, if i'm a failure as a chemist... i can always get a law degree and become a patent liar
<GotD0t> err
<GotD0t> lawyer*
<jdhutchin1> heh
<jdhutchin1> chemists can make a fair amount of money
<jdhutchin1> median pay for a phd in chemE is $100k/yr
<GotD0t> well i'm probably going the biotech route... not the chemE route
<jdhutchin1> ah
<GotD0t> too much physics in chemE
<GotD0t> rather... too much math
<GotD0t> hehe
<jdhutchin1> hmm, gotta go to the store and buy some drywall anchors
<GotD0t> have fun
<jdhutchin1> there's a towel rack in our house that's come loose
<jdhutchin1> apparently the people who put it in just screwed into the drywall
<GotD0t> hehe
<eiggirC> nah - better plan is to go stand naked and wet behind your computer
<eiggirC> let the hot air blow you dry
<silentfury> only if you have a prescott chip
<silentfury> and no fan
<jdhutchin1> my computer is a 333mhz pII
<jdhutchin1> it doesn't make enough heat
<gma> hi
<gma> I need to buy a mini PCI wireless card for my IBM T23
<gma> I run linux (ubuntu). madwifi and intel ipw2200 would both appear to be reasonably well supported
<gma> any advice before I purchase?
<gma> I was thinking of getting an atheros as there are open source drivers out for it
<jdhutchin1> yep, that's a good idea
<J4k3> (Atheros, Madwifi)
<gma> okay, ta
<gma> I've been reading that some laptops only allow some cards to work in them
<gma> is that true?
<gma> seems a bit weird
<jdhutchin1> yes, it is true
<J4k3> correct
<jdhutchin1> some of them have a whitelist in bios of cards to allow
<gma> a visible list, that I could browse?
<J4k3> my compaq pissaireeeo r3120 only takes a couple of cards
<gma> how cheeky!
<J4k3> yeah, and they're both crap
<J4k3> an older intel and this broadcom b/g card.
<jdhutchin1> aren't there hacks where you can reflash the bios and fix it?
<J4k3> luckily its got a cardbus slot... If I need more card than the broadcom can deliver, I whip out a dwl-g650 or my old nl2511cd+
<gma> I'm reading a forum thread that implies there are, yeah
<gma> for the IBM T23, at least
<J4k3> yeah
<J4k3> its "easy" to get around it on an IBM
<J4k3> or well, documented.
<Myself248> yeah, I came across that while reading a tomshardware article about adding a wifi card to a laptop
<Myself248> I think the "user-defined" pins might be my problem too. The card enumerates but has no RF output, I think the laptop's slot must be holding radio_disable active.
<gma> ta. I'll go have a look there. not finding google is very forthcoming
<Myself248> gma: read down to the bottom: http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article100-page6.php
<gma> thanks
<gma> I might be missing something here - which bit were you drawing to my attention at the bottom?
<gma> ah,the link
<gma> sorry, just seen it staring me in the fac
<gma> e
<gma> blimey. seems pretty risky to me unless you know your hex
<gma> well clever though
<guideX> anyone know how to make a homemade 'cantenna' out of wire foil and a can? (don't have the screws and bolts)
<dragorn> oi.
<dragorn> antennas, especially high frequency antennas, are extremely sensitive to the resistance, shape, etc.
<dragorn> Don't F around with it and expect it to work. Even the best cantenna is still crap.
<guideX> ok thanks
<dragorn> google antenna physics for a better explanation
<dragorn> but when you get into microwave, the slightest deviation can skew the whole antenna off
<jdhutchin1> yeah, you get a lot of effects you don't get at lower wavelengths
<guideX> yeah their's a microwave in the room, sometimes it interfears when someone gets hungary heh
<guideX> so those cantenna articles don't really work for indoor use you think
<jdhutchin1> they're better than nothing
<jdhutchin1> but they're not particularly good antennas
<guideX> paper clips seem to work best so far
<jdhutchin1> ...
<guideX> but still not good enough
<jdhutchin1> get a real directional antenna
<jdhutchin1> well, for indoor work, you usually want an omni (depending on what you're doing)
<guideX> well the wireless card has an antenna on it, i just can't seem to find a good replacement
<dragorn> sticking random **** in your antenna ports isn't a terribly good idea
<dragorn> get it wrong enough and you'll damage the radio
<jdhutchin1> yeah
<guideX> well i have the paper clips sorta twisted onto the antenna itself, maybe that isn't actually helpoing...
<dragorn> ...
<jdhutchin1> and good luck finding an swr meter to try to tune your antenna
<jdhutchin1> your paper clip is probably doing nothing
<guideX> ok good to know
<jdhutchin1> if anything it's probably making it worse
<jdhutchin1> well, nvm
<guideX> i had an idea of wrapping wire around the antenna and putting the wire in high places like up to the celling, think that would help?
<jdhutchin1> no
<jdhutchin1> see, the plastic thing you see is *not* the antenna
<guideX> hmm so nothing quick like that'd help
<guideX> ahhh
<jdhutchin1> the antenna is encased in it, there's a little dipole (usually it's about 2in long)
<dragorn> if your card has an integrated antenna, and it sounds like it does, the only way to add an antenna would be to open the card, cut traces, and solder an antenna connector on
<dragorn> which i really don't suggest you do
<guideX> no no sounds risky
<guideX> how about those homemade usb antenna's?
<guideX> i see tutorials just lacking the screws and bolts
<dragorn> thats a usb card stuck in a reflector.
<guideX> ahhhh
<jdhutchin1> yeah, sometimes the reflector is kinda close to the right shape- but usb cards are almost universally crap
<jdhutchin1> if you actually want to do something useful, get a good antenna from someplace like pacwireless
<guideX> hmm i'll have to do that
