<Rebekah> the funny thing is Wal-Mart hates Md and has very few stores in the state and only ONE in my entire county. It's not nearly as convenient here as it is in other parts of the country.

<Rebekah> b/c they move into low income areas, offer such cheap prices that everybody shops there, all other local stores close due to lack of business, and then they have a monopoly on the business.

<Rebekah> Md p***ed a law last yr that was dubbed the Wal Mart Law - Md requires that businesses over a certain size either offer benefits at a certain level OR contribute a certain percentage of their revenue to the state coffers for medicaid (subsidized health coverage)...

<Rebekah> There's only three employers in Md (Maryland) that are large enough to qualify for that law and only Wal Mart wasn't already in compliance with it when it went into effect.

<DragonShip> Rebekah, locally they had a harder time of putting local business out of business because local business is ... well, local. They can undercut all they want, but a lot of things simply aren't on their inventory or people have more commitment to local tradition. Or both.

<DragonShip> VEry true. And their way of doing business here is somewhat different. I think they know that if they don't play by LOCAL rules, they get to find out what it feels like to be abandoned for other stores.

<DragonShip> As to walking ... I get that when I go on a photo shoot 'cuz most of the palces are so far off the beaten path they don't really even have names. Not even local ones.
<Rebekah> okies, DragonShip - it's cast iron stuff but it's coated in enamel so you can wash it & nt worry about having to "season" it.
<DragonShip> Oh, now that's just plain WRONG. Cast iron HAS to be seasoned to be right. Enamel ware is something else entirely.
